Bought this car from an individual. I went to local dealer after power steering quit. I could barely turn the wheel when I drove to dealer. There is no way possible my wife or mother could muscle it. After approx. 1.5 hours they said you are ready to go. "Everything checked out fine but I needed a new steering rack to fix the problem." I was quoted $3000.00! I thought how can everything check out fine if I can't turn the wheel? When I got in the Flex to leave, the steering was working again???
I did not get an explanation - however, my nephew works for a company owned by that dealership and he went by to talk to the tech that did the work. I was told that "a gear" had popped out but he put it back in place and it would be good for awhile but if I hit a pot hole or something, it would probably pop back out. I don't believe that for a second. You don't just pop gears in and out of place. I know they had to do some kind of a computer reset or "flash" as I've heard it called.
I just want the truth. I want to be able to fix the car as I'd only had it 2 weeks when this occurred. I cannot find anyone on any of the forums, posts, etc. being told the exact problem that has to be addressed and the part to replace.
Some Flex's have been recalled and maybe other models by Ford, but for some reason Ford has gotten by, by only recalling a few of the many that have this same electric power assist steering (EPAS). How can this be?
Please help. I do not have the money to fix this "lemon" and I certainly can't risk the safety of my family by driving it. What are we supposed to do?? Please please and Thank you.
