A water pump inside the engine was a terrible idea. When it fails, and it will, the coolant mixes with the oil. This can destroy an engine. Also, I have changed several water pumps over the years and it's usually not that difficult. Put it inside the engine and that's a whole different story. I'm being charged $1600 to replace it at the dealership. Luckily I caught it straight away before the coolant got into the oil.
I think many folks might not have been that lucky. Even with the new pump, I will always be wondering when is this one going to fail, and will I catch it in time before it destroys my engine. This should not be a concern when you buy a new vehicle.
By the way, I have always had all my services done on time, on schedule and at the dealership where I bought the Flex. My advice would be to find out before you purchase a new or used vehicle, if the water pump is inside the engine. The water pump will fail and you may need a new engine because of it.
