This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Vehicle would roll in parking gear. Dealer said that bearings in transmission were worn completely out letting gears bypass each other. Damage was also done to the transmission internal casing and the gears pictures are available. Dealer picked up 1/2 of repair cost. He said he had never seen this problem before.
The parking brake will not hold well on an incline. This is especially noticed in reverse, as on a boat ramp with a boat that I am trying to launch. I can set the brake as hard as I can and the truck will still roll back against the parking pall in the automatic transmission. It becomes very difficult to then shift the transmission into gear. The dealer has looked at it twice and stated that they don't see a problem but they cannot duplicate the conditions.
We have experienced repeated transmission problems including 2 total breakdowns, the last one on 09-07-2000 endangered everyone in the vehicle. May 9, eratic shifting, speed control sensor had to be replaced, May 10 - May 22, shifting problems continued, control module replaced. May 23, total transmission failure, transmission was rebuilt onjune 8.. June 29, shifting problems started again. July 18, Ford dealer checked, reprogramed transmission and told me no problems found. July 31, Ford dealer load tested truck, replaced module and reprogramed again, everything ok. September 7, towing trailer down 7% - 7 mile lewiston grade transmission failed, lost engine compression braking and had to rely only on brakes to slow truck. Had no transmission in any gear when we reached bottom. New transmission now being installed. This is a safety problem which placed everyone in the truck in danger.

While driving truck about 65 mph and towing 4 horses, transmission locked up without warning. Problem was reported to dealership. The third and fourth gear was replaced in the transmission at owner's expense. Truck was brought to the dealership 4 times for transmission problems while under warranty.
The vehicle is being used to pull a trailer and the transmission will not hold the vehicle without putting it in park position.the vehicle will roll in the opposite direction.
While driving down the road at approximately 50mph and applying the brakes, heard a heavy noise. When taking off and giving it gas, vehicle won't shift, and the rpms were higher. Also, speedometer would go out. Vehicle is the fifth time at the dealer for service.
Brakes: Brakes fade easily and will pull to the left. Brakes also shake and shudder the whole vehicle and surge grabbing and ungrabbing when coming to a stop. The steering wheel vibrates and brake pedal pulsates. Brakes began problem with very few miles never loaded or pulling. Results in unsafe braking. Seat belt: Drivers seatbelt hangs down and gets caught in bottom of door. You shut your door, fasten the belt not knowing it is stuck in door. In sudden stops, the belt pulls free with much slack remaining possibly allowing your body to go through windshield. Belt twists very easily, and bottom pivot/anchor turns easily allowing belt to hang down in door. Must fiddle with it each time exiting the vehicle and must double check it is not stuck in door. Transmission: Automatic transmission did not disengage in cold weather causing vehicle to stall at intersection nearly causing accident several times. Transmission also shifts in and out of gear while going into overdrive erratically. It will go in and out of overdrive several time withing a second or two causing the vehicle and passengers to jerk back and forth suddenly and unexpectedly.
