I have experienced "death wobble" in my truck 6 times in the past 3 months.. this is a violent steering wheel oscillations. As this has happened with my truck with my family in the truck my wife will no longer ride in the truck and will not allow my son in the truck. This has been to the shop more than 15 times trying to repair with no fix, last time spent more than 2 weeks at the dealer for them to not fix the issue. This needs to be addressed by Ford and fixed as I am 1 of many people to experience this issue! this happens in motion speeds above 45 mph, has happened on the interstate 4 of the 6 times and 2 times was on the highway.. last time was pulling a 9,000lb travel trailer with my family in the truck next to semi that almost cause me to completely lose control!
When driving at highway speeds and you hit a pot hole or other rough bumps in the road the truck develops a severe wobble in the front end until you can get slowed down to about 40mph. I am currently on the fourth attempt with the dealership to fix the problem.
I have had the truck for 3 years and bought it brand new. Lately, for several months after hitting a bump in the road traveling between 50 and 60 mph the steering wheel and truck shake hard enough to potentially loose grip on the steering wheel. It has been to the dealership after I got notification of a possible steering linkage and suspension issue. I drove it afterwards and it seemed better. Within a month it was back to doing the same thing if not worse. It is currently still under warranty so it has not cost me anything, yet. It happens on both highway, city and back roads. This is extremely dangerous since it catches you unexpectedly after while even traveling on relatively smooth roads.
While driving at 75 mph I experienced what is known as the death wobble again, in Ford Super Duty's. this after Ford replaced a part and told me it was fixed. The Ford dealership said since they cannot duplicate the issue after the new part was installed as recommended per Ford they do not do anything about it. Attached is copy of work done when the issues first happened and the part they installed.
Death wobble steering wheel and front end shake violently making it very difficult to control vehicle after driving on rough road at highway speed. After several weeks waitig for back ordered part Ford dealer replaced steering damper as fix for this problem 2/21/2020 30241 miles. Problem back in August 2020 38817 miles.

My 2017 Ford F250 has death wobble. When driving at speeds over 50mph the front end and steering wheel shake violently out of control to the degree you have no control over the vehicle and you can't even hold onto the wheel.
My vehicle sustains and occurs at highway speeds of 65 mph and above, the front end 'death wobble.' The vehicle becomes completely erratic in steering and control after crossing a small seam and or a bump in the highway pavement surface the driver is forced to immediately reduce speed from above 60 mph down to around 20 to regain control of the vehicle. It has happened upon numerous occasion with my three-year-old vehicle, and have less than 50,000 miles. Ford has offered to replace the steering dampener component, which has been done by a non-Ford repair shop in my instance. This has done nothing to provide protection against the death wobble. My truck is currently stranded in marion Illinois, being repaired at a Ford automotive dealership. I will not drive the vehicle any further without these repairs being performed. This design flaw in Ford began in 2005 through 2019 model year F250 trucks.
Purchased brand new, had the first steering oscillating experience or death wobble at around 10000 miles. Happened on and off, took it in for warranty and they couldn't find any issues, but replaced the steering dampner. I pretty munched stopped driving over 63 mph unless I knew every bump on the road by heart. Finally got it in at another dealership at around 17000 miles due to the continued death wobble that would happen over certain bumps at speeds over 65. They found a bad lower tie rod end. After replacing the tie rod end it seemed to drive a little better, finally went 70mph again, but not for long. At about 22,000 miles it started again, my wife was with me and experienced it for the first time. She cried... has not set foot in it since. It now has 23000 miles on it. My wife refuses to ride in it or drive it. I will not allow my 3 kids to ride in it either. If it happened at the wrong time it could easily kill someone. I'm a very mechanically inclined person, and experienced driver. It truly scares me when it happens. Between the death wobble, and Ford urging dealerships to hush hush the severity, I wont be buying another new Ford anytime soon. And I purchased 3 new trucks in the last 5 years, and have easily owned 15 or more. This is just my complaint about something that is potentially a deadly design flaw. Not to mention it shakes bad while towing. And it's not the trailer, I pulled 3 different ones. And the dealer told me it just how they tow when I brought the tsb, part numbers etc. For them to repair it. And just ignore it. I have zero complaints on any of the other Ford vehicles I have owned, but this 2017 F250 has made me rethink my next new vehicle purchase. I also have video footage of several of the death wobble occurrences.
PURCHASED THE VEHICLE 2/03/17. ON 12/01/17 WIFE AND 7 YR. OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE 2017 F250 VEHICLE ON I205 NORTHBOUND ON GLEN JACKSON BRIDGE IN OREGON. SHE RAN OVER THE EXPANSION JOINT GOING ABOUT 60MPH AND THE THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK STARTED BOUNCING VIOLENTLY. OTHER TRAFFIC MOVED AWAY FROM HER AS SHE WAS LOSING CONTROL OF VEHICLE. SHE WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP SAFELY ON THE SHOULDER. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT GET THE ISSUE TO REOCCUR. THEY SENT IT OUT THE DOOR IN SAME CONDITION. ISSUE REOCCURRED MANY TIMES. FINALLY I WAS ABLE TO RECORD IT ON VIDEO AND ONLY THEN WOULD WESLIE FORD TAKE IT IN AND DO WORK ON IT. SERVICE WRITER [XXX] SAID FORD DID NOT HAVE A REPAIR FOR THIS ISSUE. SHE SAID THEY WOULD PUT SOME SHIMS IN TO HELP. IT DID A BIT. BUT STILL ACTUALLY BOUNCES SO BAD SOMETIMES THAT THE WHEELS LEAVE THE ROAD AND YOU LOSE CONTROL OF STEERING.. CALLED SERVICE MANAGER [XXX] AT DEALER AND TOLD HIM WE ARE LUCKY THAT MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER DIDNT GET IN A ACCIDENT, HURT, OR KILLED BECAUSE OF THE TRUCK MALFUNCTION. HE SAID "UNFORTUNATELY SOMETIMES THATS WHAT IT TAKES TO GET SOMETHING DONE". REALLY? I WAS SHOCKED! PLEASE FOLLOW UP WITH THIS AND ENSURE THAT WESLIE FORD, SERVICE WRITERS AND OTHERS ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE. PEOPLES LIVES ARE IN DANGER AND AT RISK. ALL I ASK IS THAT FORD STAND BEHIND VEHICLE MALFUNCTIONS AND REPAIR THEM SO THAT PEOPLE ARE SAFE. THANK YOU INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
While driving on the highway around speeds of 60mph -70mph if a front wheel would strike rough pavement, I would lose control of the truck. The front end would shake violently aka "death wobble", and I would have to immediately brake and bring the truck to a stop, for the shaking to stop. Every time the "death wobble" has happened I have almost caused an accident because I could not control the truck. My truck has only 29000 miles, and the issue began before I had 5,000 miles on the truck. I have taken my truck in for this issue several times and the issue was not fixed.
The contact owns a 2017 Ford F-250. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle wobbled uncontrollably upon hitting a bump in the roadway. The vehicle was taken to eide Ford Lincoln (800 E bismarck expy, bismarck, nd 58504) on several occasions to be repaired. The steering damper was replaced, the tires were rotated, balanced, and aligned however, the failure persisted. Recently, the contact was informed that all four tires needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and a complaint was filed. The contact was then referred to another Ford dealer for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. Consumer stated death wobble has occurred 4 times.
I received a recall for a condition known as the superduty death wobble where the truck steering wheel shakes violently when you hit uneven pavement during highway speeds. I had experienced this twice then took it to my dealer who acknowledged and performed the recall. They replaced the steering dampener. It happened 4 more times with the new part and shaking far worse than before. Attached is the 2nd repair which acknowledges both repairs. I am trying to reach Ford Motor Company to file a formal complaint with help from my dealer. Attached is the repair invoice from the 2nd time in.
I have a 2017 F-250 with 24,000 miles on it recently started the "death wobble". usually only happens at higher speeds (60 or better) and after hitting a "rough patch" in the road or bridge joints. Ford seems to say it's because some of us aren't always carrying +/- 1000 lbs of cargo. I wonder if the problem has to do with the 800 lbs they took off the tare weight of the truck when they went to the aluminum body in 2017?
I have now experienced the death wobble 6 times with this truck, all between 65-80 mph. The last two on 6/12/2020 at highway speeds. This means my truck front end suspension and eyeing shakes so violently that you literally cannot control the vehicle until reductions speed below 30 mph. My truck has already been taken into the dealership twice to correct this problem. Today was the worst soo far. Had to reduce speed in la traffic to 30 mph for it to stop. This problem is going to kill someone very soon. Had I veered left, it would be have put into the center divide, right into a semi. This started when my vehicle has less than 10K miles. Today the vehicle has 26K. Recall these vehicles!
I experience death wobble in my 2017 Ford F-250. It is dangerous and alarming when this death wobble occurs. Any small unevenness in the road can cause the tires to start wildly wobbling. Normally happens at around 70mph and stops once slowed down to 40 mph. Very difficult to steer when this happens. Your question below ask when this happened. It happens at least a few times a week on IH35. It is not a single event - it happens often.
Experiencing death wobble after hitting bump or bridge in road and hearing a loose clunking noise in front end when turning steering wheel back and forth.
Traveling down the highway at normal highway speeds, my truck will start shaking violently to the point of barely being able to keep control. I have to slow down and almost come to a stop for it to stop shaking. This has happened on multiple occasions. The first time I side swiped a concrete barrier and tore off my running board. My family refuses to travel in the truck now.
While driving on a straight paved road around 50 mph I hit a rough patch of road. The steering wheel started to shack reel bad and the front end did the same. I started to lose control of the truck and got on the brakes hard and regained control at about 40 mph. If I was towing my boat when this happened we would have been a crash. I have a witness to this who was in the front passenger seat. This truck is not safe to drive above 40 mph.
My 2017 F-50 60,000 miles, experiences a severe wobble in the steering, noticeable when the vehicle encounters a small bump or small deformity in the road also when accelerating above 70 mph. The vehicle is well maintained and serviced on schedule. Have experienced the problem with and without towing a trailer. The wobble becomes extreme to the point of loosing control suddenly decelerating causes the wobble to stop and regain control.
