I bought a 2017 Ford F-250 from Blue Bonnet Ford in New Braunfels Texas. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership for regularly scheduled maintenance on time, every time.

On 12/21/2019 I took the vehicle to the dealership for scheduled maintenance ahead of a trip to Colorado. At that time the vehicle had approximately 34,500 miles on it. I asked they rotate and balance the tires. I know they checked the air pressure because I watched them do it. The service was completed and I departed.

On my way to Colorado I was traveling at 75 (the posted speed limit) with the cruise set. I drove over an expansion seam on a bridge and the trucks front end began to shake and bounce so violently I could not control the vehicle. I had to quickly slow down to about 45 to get it under control. I continue on my way and the same thing happened two more times.

When I arrived at my destination I began to research the problem. I found that it’s a known problem to Ford with this model truck, known as The Death Wobble. I want to go on record with NTHSA and Ford to make you aware of this issue with my truck. I will take the vehicle to the dealership upon my return.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. If you have the same problem, report it to NTHSA.

F-250 STX 6.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 44,000 miles

Had never had an issue with anything while driving it around my home town roads or highways. Then I went on a long road trip to Dallas where the steering wheel/front suspension started shaking violently while driving on the Dallas highway. It occurred twice back to back, after having to slow down initially so the shaking would ease up. On the way back home it happened again. Took it to Ford right after where I was advised this issue has been reported and they would replace a steering stabilizer which I have coming in the next week. I hope this repair fixes the issue.

F-250 Lariat V8 - 6.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,200 miles

The front end of my truck and steering wheel shakes violently at highway speeds of 45MPH+ when braking or going over potholes/rough roads. The latest incident was 12/26/2019 on our trip to Santa Ana. The wobbles were much worst this time, as I was pulling my 5th wheel trailer. We were too scared to continue with our trip, so we turned around to go back home.

Death Wobble started after 15K miles on my truck. Dealership tell me dampeners on my 2017 F250 needs to be replaced. But the parts are in back order and they don't know when they will have the parts.

F-250 SD 6.7L Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 22,500 miles

I bought the 2017 F250SD Diesel truck brand new. It has never been off road. It developed severe 'death wobble' at 13k, at, and above 45mph. First VA dealership drove it 15 miles and said nothing was wrong. 2nd VA dealership could not see any visible problems, but test drove it and experienced the death wobble at 45mph. The mechanic was terrified.

Ford HQ had them change parts at random in the front end, until the problem stopped. Truck now has 22k on it and the death wobble is back. Dealership in PA could not re-produce the problem so would do nothing. Ford customer help told me there was nothing they would do and told me to drive the 6 hours back to VA! This is a CATASTROPHIC FAILURE of the front end, and is a severe danger not just to me but anyone around me. It is no fun at 70mph when it kicks in. All I can do is jam on the brakes until I slow to 25mph when it goes away. I have caused trucks and cars to swerve around me as I head for the hard shoulder.

I see other people have had this happen on their 2017 F250's. PA dealership told me they had also heard of this. Ford told me they had never heard of it. Ha! Why, with something so severe, does Ford deny this problem? Are they really waiting for someone to get killed? I would like to see if the trucks with this problem were manufactured at the same plant, or if the front end components were manufactured at the same plant. The dealerships wont drive the truck long enough to hit the 'right bump' to trigger the death wobble, so will do nothing.

What can I do? I have been a Ford guy for years but the customer service and support has been appalling. I will NEVER buy another Ford. Do not buy these trucks in case you get one with this unsolvable problem.

F-250 Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,000 miles

The front end (tires) wobble on all bumps in the road, not bad but definite wobble. Tires wearing very fast with cupping of tread. Dealer stated Ford does not have a wobble problem. Could not duplicate the condition but inspector noted and commented on tire cupping. Told to rotate every 4000 miles and pay for balancing every time. Went on internet to see if any suggestions and had a front end stabilizer installed ($300 ). Not fixed but MUCH better. Just had serviced and told them and service rep said Ford has a fix that is under warranty after I paid for work. They did give me a $30 credit for my $300 repair. Step up Ford.
