The contact owns a 1996 Ford F-250. The vehicle caught on fire while parked in the driveway. A neighbor informed the contact of the vehicle fire and called the fire department. The fire destroyed the vehicle, and was able to maintain the side panels for the truck bed. The manufacturerwas currenty investigating the vehicle fire. However, the contact had no information on the status of the investigation. The contact could provide pictures of the vehicle. The current and failure mileage was 30,000.

: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked in the driveway for 45 minutes, flames erupted from the entire front bumper area. The vehicle cab and engine compartment quickly became engulfed in flames. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The police were on the scene and a report was taken. The vehicle was totaled due to the extensive fire damage. The manufacturer was contacted. There was a NHTSA recall # 05V388000 regarding the vehicle speed control. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The consumer was told the recall was limited to trucks under 8500 gross vehicle weight, however according to a letter that was received no there was no gvw limitation. The consumer believed that the service body increased the gvw which eliminated the vehicle from being included in the recall. Updated 08/29/06.

Ford F250 4X4 caught of fire at the speed control switch. Ford says no recall on this vehicle. Ford says put old part back on. That it was very rare that it happened.

I had raised my hood to check the oil, and there was smoke from the cruise control shut off switch located at the end of the master cylinder. It continued to smoke and burn until I unplugged it. It was nearly on fire. The body of the switch is melted and burned. When I went to Ford dealer on 4/17/06 for a replacement part, the parts manager thought that this might be part of the recall that is in force for the F-150. The service manager checked, and it does not apply to the F-250. This is disturbing to me, because the switch is that same for either vehicle.

: the contact stated one year ago the cruise control stopped working. There was a burning smell when this happened, but the vehicle was not seen by a mechanic. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop for regular maintenance. The contact was alerted that there is a recall for the vehicle speed control, #05V388000. The vehicle did not have the failure associated with the recall and is not included due to the VIN. Updated 2/27/2006 -

The contact states there is a NHTSA recall campaign 05V388000 concerning the vehicle speed control:cruise control. This vehicle manifests the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to VIN. The contact repaired the vehicle at his own expense.

On 1/10/05, I arrived home from work and parked my vehicle at approximately 6:00 pm. The vehicle was parked under the carport 15 feet away from my bedroom window. At 12:30 am, my wife and I heard a noise, looked out the blinds to find fire coming from drivers side edges of hood. Me and my son ran out to get a garden hose as my wife called 911. As I was passing by the vehicle the paint was beginning to burn off directly above the break booster. I began spraying the vehicle through the radiator grill, as my son was trying to pop the hood. I sprayed around the edges, flames were coming out mostly from the drivers side. Then the drivers side plastic tire well burned out enough, I was able to get water underneath the hood. The fire department arrived at 12:34 am. They popped the hood using their cable tool and began to apply water. Luckily the fire was extinguished within about 15 minutes, due to the fire department is only a couple of blocks away. Because of the quick response of extinguishing the fire, you can definitely tell where the fire originated. As you can tell by the pictures I have enclosed, the air filter on the right-hand side suffered heat damage, but were not destroyed. On the left side of the engine the rubber hoses and fuel lines were still intact and not burned. The only thing that was completely destroyed was the break fluid reservoir, and the cruise control switch. When the fireman examined it, they thought it may have come from the wiring harness, they had never seen the break fluid reservoir catch on fire. I only had liability insurance on this vehicle. Due to the extensive damage, I sold it for salvage only.

Consumer reported Ford F250 Super Duty 1996 caught on fire. The fire took place outside the house with the key out of the ignition. Fire originated from the cruise control switch under the hood. The fire department did investigated and determined that cruise control switch caused the fire.

Contact states: A fire started which was related to the cruise control module sitting on the brake master cylinder. The fire started while the vehicle was shut off in a parking lot by itself. Some of the engine equipment burned. Consumer contacted Ford, and Ford said the vehicle was not under recall because of the year of the vehicle and tbe VIN. Consumer paid for the repair of out of his pocket.

After driving the vehicle consumer went home, parked the vehicle for a couple of hours. After returning to the vehicle, he smelled smoke, lifted the hood, and discovered that cruise control was smoking. He disconnected the battery, and the smoking ceased. The cruise control was later replaced.
