A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

Again overnight freezing rain. Went out to the truck unlocked the doors, got in the truck to start it and let it warm up and drivers side door wouldn't latch. Let the truck warm up for about 15 minutes. The wife and I went out to get in the truck and my drivers side would not latch. The passengers side door did latch. I fooled with the drivers side door locking and unlocking it and I finally latched, and went on our way. We drove about 15 miles stopped at a restaurant to have breakfast got out of the truck and the doors locked by themselves. We went in and ate breakfast. When I came out and tried to unlock the doors the passenger side door unlocked but the drivers side door stayed locked. Being 75 years old and having my right knee replaced last February, I couldn't climb over the console to get into the drivers seat. So my wife climbed over it and drove us to the store to do some shopping.

When we stopped at the store to shop both doors unlocked when we hit the unlocked the button. We got out and drivers side door wouldn't latch. While the wife was in the store shopping, I stayed in the truck with it running a hot air blasting on the inside of the drivers side door. It still would not latch. Wife came out of the store about 20 minutes later, got in the truck closed the passenger side door and it latched but drivers side door would not latch. Tried locking the doors, passenger door locked but drivers door would not lock. Hit lock button and lock would just pop back up on drivers side door while passengers side door stayed locked. Out came the trusty bungee cord again so we could drive 17 miles back home and all the while blasting hot air on drivers side door through the vent system. We got home and got put of the truck closed drivers side door and it latched along with passengers side door. Hit the lock button on my key fob and both doors locked!!!! Merry Christmas hey!

Ford has got to do something about this dangerous problem. I would hate to see a young family with kids in the vehicle that has doors that aren't latching and locking and unlocking properly. I don't know if the crew cab and the two door cab f-150's are having the same problems but my super cab definitely has a major problem. It doesn't bother me that the doors won't lock. But it does bother me that the doors won't latch and I have to use a bungee cord to hold the doors shut while I am driving it.

Update from Dec 26, 2022 It has stayed cold since Christmas Eve around 20 degrees. My doors will not unlock so I can't drive the truck.

Here we go again, no freezing rain this time just very cold with a heavy frost. Went out to get in the truck unlocked the doors got in the truck to and closed the door and it would not latch. Went around to passenger door on my super cab and opened that door and exercised the automatic door locks. Lock and unlock several times, every time I locked it the locks would just pop back up to the unlock position. Now neither door will latch. This time I had an emergency at 4:30 in the morning. I had to take bungee cord and hook it to the two doors to keep them from flying open. I drove over 30 miles and when I got to my destination and got out of the truck and closed the doors they both latched and locked ok. Ford needs to do something. This is very dangerous when you have to drive with bungee cords holding your doors shut.

problem #2

F-150 XLT Crew Cab 3.5L Ecoboost V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,100 miles

I rated this problem as fairly significant because it renders the vehicle and its contents vulnerable to theft (driver side door does not unlock or lock in cold weather). As soon as the truck or ambient temperature warms up the problem disappears. I have had this problem two cold mornings in a row so far. The vehicle is scheduled for service but the dealer says they need to be able to duplicate the problem because there is currently no recall for this for the crew cab model, only for the other model(s). Therefore I expect this to be covered under warrantee. I will be extremely disappointed and angry if it is not. Otherwise I am completely enjoying the truck so far.

Update from Jan 13, 2019: I have since learned that this problem dates at least back to 2015 F150's so it appears that Ford has not been in any hurry to correct the problem at the manufacturing level. Instead they have issued two technical service bulletins to dealers with a solution procedure. So again, I expect this to be corrected under warranty and will update this as soon as I know.

Update from Jan 22, 2019: When I brought the truck in for service I demonstrated that the right rear door power door lock was also frozen as was the driver's door power lock. The dealer said they would replace both door lock actuator/latch assemblies. Recent very cold weather (5 degrees) provided a good opportunity for evaluation. After sitting over night in such conditions the power door locks functioned properly as did the other doors and tailgate locks that had not been affected.
