Why is a pickup that we have never used to tow or work with all Hwy miles, bought new and paid nearly $67,000.00 for new rattling like a pile of junk when we start it?

It seems like the fuel has drained back for right bank of cylinders and is not present when it is needed to fire; almost like there is a vacuum problem. The longer it sets between starts the more it rattles. I think it's dry firing and rattling like a diesel engine while the left side is firing.

Fuel injection has been around for a while, and this seems to be unique to this engine. Our 2015 for did not do this... Why hasn't someone figured this out yet?

Have not done mechanic work for years and don't care too anymore.... so, if this sounds stupid, I could care less.

F-150 Lariat 3.5L

Bought this '17 Ford F-150 Supercrew Lariat 3.5L with about 66,000 miles on it. Right away I noticed it sounded like a diesel for a couple seconds on a cold start. Took it back to dealer armed with a Youtube video and they said they'd fix it. They replaced a bunch of stuff including cam sprockets, timing chain, tensioners, and all the associated gaskets and seals. Thought it fixed the issue.

Now, I'm at about 95,000 miles and it's doing it again. I've changed oil at the 50% due mark every time using the proper full synthetic. First time buying a Ford and this is not sitting well with me. Taking it in one more time to see if they can fix it. If not, I'll get rid of it. Should've went with the 5.0L I guess.

I have a bad rattle/knocking at startup. I brought it to my local ford service center and had them diagnose the problem. It turns out to be bad/worn cam phasers. The recommendation is to replace Cam phasers. The ford dealer Newins Ford said there is a TSB to replace parts BUT also stated NOT to do the work till the next TSB comes out for this problem - and told me to keep driving it !!!! I think it's not right to keep using the vehicle while it's making that noise sooner or later something major will fail and make the problem worse. It seems like someone at Ford dropped the ball on finding a real solution for this. So for now I have a $50,000 truck just sitting around.

I mean I could go the length here but let me spare everyone of this rant. I mean, it was annoying enough that truck was acting up but dealing with dealerships was even worse. As per dealership, they received absolutely no support from Ford engineering and they went blindly and replaced phasers and the problem went away.

Same story for these 3.5L EcoBoosts. I purchased this truck used CPO in November of 2019. The rattle had always been there, which I assumed was because it was winter and cold out. (Every car makes noise in the winter). Well, now it's September and this continues to make the noise NOT ONLY on startup. If I press down the throttle and then release, it rattles louder.

This has happened on my 2017 V6 3.5 Ecoboost with 40,000km or 25,000miles (still under original warranty) on it, so I would say ABSOLUTELY it can happen to you! Mine has been in the dealership shop now for 48 days. Considered Unit down, Emergency down which is Ford lingo for Do not have parts available (and no clue when they will get them in) and Do Not Drive. Which then was a fight to get a loaner vehicle. I Paid $50,000 for a vehicle to get me from here to there and this is there problem and I am out of wheels??? REALLY??? I was then told that I because I didn't have extended warranty that I would not be getting one. I had to Nag ford every other day and finally 17 days later was granted a loaner which I still have.

I called the dealership about this rattle on cold start up and no check engine light. I YouTubed and found this timing chain thing and mentioned it. The dealer told me to bring it in but was certain it was not the timing chain, and he said he never heard of all the chatter about it online...(Hmmm, its 2019 dude, era of YouTube. There is even videos on changing them out! ) This video is absolutely amazing and has now armed me with knowledge that I would not have previously possessed.

Now I know what was or should have been replaced. Not to mention what to look out for, possible leaks as so many gaskets are involved in this repair. I am hoping to bounce the parts list on the work order against his list on here if and when I get my truck back. I am now trying to get the word out as many places I can to make sure people know that this is not fixed. It continues to be a problem with the F150 3.5 Ecoboost.

First time in the shop was for oil leak. Took 2 weeks to get parts. Second time was for rattling in engine when started cold. Has been in the shop for just over 2 months now and Ford has no idea when they will get parts. Apparently the parts come from a supplier who is "having issues". The truck is a lease and I opened a complaint case with Ford Customer Care. They eventually told me that it didnt qualify for a replace or repurchase. Absolutely livid that a new $70K truck is out of commission 90 days in the first year, and Ford says "Oh Well, Sh*t Happens". Would love to shove it directly up the CEO's ass. Take responsibility for a lemon and let me out of the lease! Not complicated.
