3.5-liter V6 ecoboost engine shudder, shake and then rapidly lose power while I'm accelerating. Advertised gas mileage of 22 is impossible; more like 16 highway and 14.4 in city. I had the engine checked at Ford dealership but no problems found!
I was driving at 60mph in a foggy rain when I began up a hill. I moved to the left lane as the two cars in front of me were slowing when my engine stuttered and I lost power causing me to drastically slow down. A service required message flashed on my display and a advanctrac service light illuminated. For the remainder of the trip I had very limited power and the vehicle was gear hunting. Once powered of and powered back on the vehicle operated normally.
I had slowed down to exit off the freeway to get on another freeway. When I pushed the accelerator, the truck started to shutter, shake, and lose power. I took my foot completely off the accelerator and let the truck coast a short distance. When I tried to accelerate again, the truck seemed fine. It did this twice on the same day. I took it to the Ford dealership and they told me the truck was fine. I have an eco-boost V-6 engine.
The truck has a shutter when accelerating. It has a hesitation all the time in the engine. If I am going up a hill and running the speed limit, it has a major hesitation before it will shift gears to get on up the hill. The gas mileage is not as good as it claims to be either.
While driving at highway speed, I heard a pop and 'ding' sound before losing all electrical items - dash board, head lights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, etc., but the engine was still operating. I then felt a grinding noise and immediately exited the highway safely to park at a gas station. I turned off and removed the key but the engine was still running. I was only a few miles from a Ford dealership. I inserted the key, turned it to the on position and tried to put the truck into gear while depressing the brake. The transmission brake release would not work. I called roadside assistance who scheduled a tow to the dealership. I had to call the dealership to figure out how to turn the engine off. They advised that I should pull the fuel pump relay fuse which did stop the engine. To date, Ford does not know what is wrong.

Merging onto interstate at 50 mph I accelerated hard to merge into traffic. Complete loss of acceleration nearly causing an accident with a tractor trailer behind us. Violent shuddering of entire vehicle, check engine light flashed and then remained on. After nearly a minute of feathering the accelerator, the problem subsided and ability to accelerate was regained. This had already happened once on the same drive and a couple if times prior to this incident. I dropped the truck off at the dealer this am after driving it for two days with the check engine light on. They said they would call with an update in the afternoon, but when 7pm rolled around and I had not yet heard from them I called to see what was going on and was told that they were waiting for a replacement intercooler and to call back in the morning and speak with the service advisor. Seems like a very common - not to mention dangerous - problem for Ford not to be publicly dealing with it, or at least being more proactive about issuing a recall for. Hopefully no one gets hurt before the problem is acknowledged & fixed.
Vehicle was purchased on 3/16/13 as a demo model with 6300 miles on it. Made a left turn and accelerated to merge into traffic on 3/19/13 when the whole vehicle shuddered violently and the engine lost power resulting in people having to hit their brakes and honk at us to avoid hitting us. The engine continued to bog down as the accelerator was pushed. I let the vehicle coast to almost a stop before the symptoms went away and could drive as normal. I looked up symptoms on internet and found many people experiencing same symptoms with this new eco-boost engine by Ford in their trucks. It seems that the intercooler can collect condensation in humid or rainy environments and have that water forced to the engine when the accelerator is pushed hard causing the vehicle to shudder and lose power. Ford has apparently identified this problem and issued a tbs service bulletin instructing the charged air cooler be replaced with a newly designed one for model year 2011-2012 F-150's with the 3.5L V6 eco-boost engine if a customer complains of the above symptoms and some people have reported this solution has not fixed the problem. This is extremely dangerous as one could lose power as many have reported, towing heavy loads, on the highway passing and other situations that a loss of power could lead to a fatal accident. The "newly designed" charged air cooler has been on back order for months and people are being told to "drive their vehicles carefully" if their dealer doesn't provide a rental or vehicle to drive while awaiting repair. My vehicle was taken back to dealership on 3/21/13 and has been sitting their awaiting the part as I feel it is unsafe to drive.
Full throttle passing. Severe engine miss. Loss of power. Could not complete pass. Had to pull back in line. Seams to be problem on ecoboost V6 engines. Cold climate humidity. Possible fix service bulletin parts B O intermittent cant predict when power loss will happen
When accelerating to pass another car, the vehicle suddenly looses power. After accelerating rapidly to get on the freeway and releasing the gas pedal, the car continues to accelerate. Ford said there is a problem with their intercoolers and they have been on backorder for several months. This is a safety issue for me and my family and Ford tells me to continue to drive my car while I wait more months until the parts are ready. ## VIN failed ##
While driving on freeway and trying to pass, vehicle started shaking violently and lost power. Also when pulling out into traffic vehicle when lose power and engine shakes. Engine light came ona nd has remained on. Very dangerous situations continue to happen daily. Ford ecoboost system has a problem, dealership says Ford is aware but does not know when parts to repair might be available. Says to continue to drive. I am concerned a major accident is waiting to happen. This seems to be something Ford was aware of when sold this vehicle.
While traveling at highway speed (cold winter morning), with cruise control on, started to climb hill, engine began to throttle up, then the truck began to shake violently, engine lost power. Shut off cruise control and coasted onto shoulder. Was able to slowly engage throttle and continue, but any increase in throttle above "gentle" would bring on the shudder and power loss. Engine light flashed and stayed lit for next 20 minutes. Experienced similar scenario later the same day. Took to dealer. Dealer indicated charged air cooler works "too well". cools air so much that condensation forms and causes the issue. Dealer indicated a technical service bulletin had been issued on the problem. Need new cac and shield. Two weeks (+/-) before parts arrived. Dealer completed tsb 12-10-19, according to the work order: Replaced cac cooler assembly and installed new air deflector shield, reprogrammed PCM. Did not fix the issue. Same problem on the way home from the dealer. Drove it for one week assuming moisture may need time to "clear up". problem still existed for 7 days. Any mild to strong throttle input would bring on shudder. One week after "fixed" with new cac, I tried to merge onto highway, at 60-70 % throttle, violent shudder occurred and engine began to lose power. Again, coasted on shoulder until truck would respond to throttle input without shuddering and power loss. Luckily, traffic was "light" at the time. Could have been a serious incident. Engine light came on and has not gone off for 3 days. Now any throttle input beyond "gentle" brings on the shudder. Contacted dealer, going back in. Truck has eco boost V6.
Traveling West on I-20 in tx for several hours through rain/mist/foggy conditions. Exited the highway for fuel. Upon reentering the highway and attempting to accelerate to speed, truck began shaking violently and did not respond to inputs from the throttle. I was able to speed up to about 45mph before the engine problem developed. Luckily I had a shoulder to pull over on as I had entered the interstate ahead of a tractor-trailer combo who was doing the speed limit and approaching my rear bumper very quickly. After the engine began misfiring at about 45 mph, I could not increase speed, I was only able to slow down and pull off onto the shoulder. During the incident, the check engine light illuminated, began flashing until the vehicle came to a stop on the shoulder, then remained illuminated until the truck was restarted 5 times on the shoulder.
V6 ecoboost engine went into limp home mode while attempting to pass. Unexpected failure of engine caused loss of power and would not travel faster than 10 miles per hour. Unexpected situation occurrence is extremely dangerous and occurred at highway speed of 55 mph. Ford dealership has technical service bulletin on problem but Ford does not have parts available to fix with backorder of parts projected to be 2 months. Ford dealer indicated problem occurs because moisture builds up in air intake cowl and when turbo intercooler senses the moisture engine shuts down. This is a serious problem requiring a better response by Ford Motor Co.
Pressed gas to pass a slower moving vehicle and it bogged and had a major loss of power. It was raining out and it felt as the truck sucked some water into the engine, research leads me to believe it was the cac, or intercooler.
I pulled out to pass a slower vehicle on a two lane highway in a passing zone as accelerating my F150 loss power and began shaking. Luckily I was able to pull back into my lane before the oncoming car hit me head on. My F150 continued to shake a lose power, after a few moments of this it regained power and the shaking halted. My check engine light has remained on since this.I took the truck in to my dealer to check this out and was told it is a problem with the intercooler and they would order parts to repair. As of today (Feb, 20th 2013) I am still waiting for the parts to come in. I have spoken with Ford customer care and was informed the supposed parts are on a back order. The loss of power and shaking has happened a few more times since, also my remote start does not work due to the check engine light being on. My fuel mileage has dropped from 18.7 to 14 mpg. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle, as you never know when it is going to lose power.
It was a foggy, moist day and when I accelerated to get around a slow moving vehicle I was in the passing lane! my truck lost all engine power and had no throttle response for 15 seconds, no check engine light came on, my truck went into limpmode. Thankfully no one was behind me and I was not injured or involved in a crash!!!
The contact owns 2012 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled and the check engine lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 4,000 and the current mileage was 4,090.
Accelerating from freeway on ramp at about 25 mph, slowly pushing pedal down truck tachometer gauge speed up to between 5500 RPM and 7000 RPM. However truck did not move. Transmission acted like it was in neutral. This lasted 4 or 5 seconds; then engine started missing and running rough. All the time vehicle had slowed to approximately 15 mph. I narrowly avoided being rearended by pulling off the shoulder of the highway. This happen on I-20 near the rest area West bound in monahans Texas. Weather was clear, and temp about 42 degrees. Has happened at least three times since then. Fuel was from national vendor and same brand I normally use. Dealer is oblivious to this and what to do.
Driving on highway, began to pass a semi truck. Engine began to shake and shudder and then power loss. Had to make sudden brake to avoid head on collision with oncoming car. Engine light is on and Ford has told me that they did not have an immediate fix to the problem. Have since been told that there is a moisture problem in the turbo coolers. They do not have parts to fix and do not have a fix date. They told me to keep driving the truck but I am afraid that the motor will cut out and cause a crash that could be fatal. The dealership wont give me another truck to drive in the mean time. I do not have extra vehicles to leave it parked until they find a fix. I am fearful of driving the truck as it is and Ford cant fix it.
While passing a vehicle my Ford F150 began to shudder dramatically, lost power immediately, causing me to pull to the side of the road. It was raining at the time. This could have definitely caused an accident. The service engine light came on and stayed on. I took it to the dealer and they stated it was a failure of the intercooler for turbo on the ecoboost engine. A replacement part has been ordered but Ford states, that due to the massive amount of calls for this part, it would be about 3 months to replace the part. This is definitely an accident waiting to happen, as they told me this could occur again. I have found numerous reports of this happening on other eco boost engines.
