I understand from other F150 owners whose trucks are within the same model year as mine that this is a timing chain and phaser issue that's causing the rattle noise on cold startups for which there was a TSB issued. However, I've never received this TSB nor did it come up when I've had the truck at the dealer for other service work. What is concerning is that Ford knew about this issue but failed to inform me leaving me to deal with an issue that should have been covered and rectified by Ford that will now cost me well into the 5 digits. Other than this type of irresponsible customer care, I really love the truck and the power it's provided until now.

Engine has grinding noise upon startup, ALL lights began blinking for no apparent reason, engine stalls upon acceleration at around 55 to 60 mph, engine smokes when first started. Has been in shop once and has not been repaired. Mechanic has no clue as to problem. (BEWARE PEOPLE DO NOT PURCHASE ONE OF THESE JUNKERS). Finally someone that knows how PLEASE get a class action law suit against ford motor company on this matter. I have read countless owner problems on this situation. Again I can not stress it enough (BEWARE PEOPLE, DO NOT PURCHASE ONE OF THESE JUNKERS).

March 1st/2017 - Noticed a rattle during cold startup of my 2011 F150 Ecoboost. After quickly researching the symptom, it seems like it's the typical Ford Timing Chain and Tensioner rattle. Taking it into Ford today for further diagnostics. Definitely not impressed at this time.

Update from Mar 31, 2017: Took the truck to the dealership a couple weeks ago. Told them I figured it was the timing components causing the rattle on startup. They couldn't verify the problem until they had the timing cover off. Ended up having the timing chain, phasers, etc replaced under my extended warranty (Thankfully!). Ended up having a final invoice of $3319 for the repair. Seems to have fixed the issue.

This problem is extremely annoying. The fact that Ford only allows it to be covered under 5yr/60,000 miles is terrible. Multiple people have this issue on various different years of and multiple different Ford models!! Ford says they can't do anything about it. This is an issue that should easily be covered under 100,000 miles.

The best part is, Ford is well aware of the problem. They have released multiple different TSB's on this issue. TSB 14-0194, TSB 15-0131, and TSB 16-0027 all deal with the rattling upon cold start or otherwise known as the stretching of the Primary Timing Chain. But instead they say if you want it fixed it will cost upwards of $2,000 if you're are over the 60K mile mark. If this is happening to your truck, get it into the dealer as soon as possible. They won't even give a discount on a vehicle that is 2,000 miles over the 60K mark. Such a joke. The fact that this isn't on recall is surprising.

To diagnose the problem I left the truck at my local Ford Dealer on a Friday afternoon and met them Monday morning to cold start the truck with a tech present. It rattled very loudly for the tech and they took the truck in to figure out was wrong.

They kept the truck for the week and let me know that Ford Engineering Hotline said NOT to fix the issue because there is no repair at this time, which is quite interesting considering there is a thread about this issue on F-150Forum.Com that has over 400 posts regarding the issue.

The problem seems to be the timing chain and tensioner but Fords attempt to repair this by replacing the chain, tensioner and gears has not fixed many of the trucks. They've come back with the same issue.

Ford knows there is a problem but cannot fix it. They will tell you this doesn't damage the engine which is complete baloney because if you follow the forum thread you'll see this issue progresses into the truck throwing error code p0016 and then going into limp mode. At this time they must replace the chain and gears but again, it's not fixing the problem. There are truck owners reporting this issue after the fix has been applied so we know it's not working.

At this time there is no fix... Ford expects me to drive this truck until the engine blows. Hopefully this doesn't happen while on a trip with my family towing our trailer.

ERMAHGERD, this is my 4th complaint about this F-150 FXcrement4. About 1 in 15 times I cold start the truck I get a decently loud "Clank" after it whispers to life. It sounds a bit like one of those early morning victory farts, you know..the ones that wake you up, but not abruptly. Only, it's my Ecoboost making that noise. Really, really strange. Must be something it drank. Bud dum chhhhh! No? nothing? Damn.

I've listened to the noise closely after remote starting the engine (Remote start of which doesn't work most of the time, so when I have my ear buried in the wheel-well to find out where the noise is coming from the horn blares at me and I walk away in a fit of rage with a ringing ear, and go inside and yell at nobs on Xbox live).

The noise sounds like its coming from the passenger side area, perhaps near the manifold or turbo. I haven't tried to have it diagnosed yet, it's mostly a lost cause. I just hope to jeesus that I have time to skip town, bound for a safe-house away from society across the Mexico border before the guy that buys this truck from me phones me about the new problems he's having. I mean..uhh..what?
