Back Window defroster stopped working. Contacts looked all black and Charred. Eventually noticed that the rear window was not closing all the way and leaking. Then it stopped working all together and would eventually creep open. Had to replace the whole dam thing. $875. Plus tax. Safelight Auto Glass.

rear window shattered

Pass on to all F-150 owners. Rear defroster will shatter windows. Call 800 392 3673 and press options 1, 5 and 4. Report your claim to them with any other stories to them and hopefully they will issue a recall on this issue. Some have reported smoke in their trucks which could result in fire. Please share with anyone with a F-150. Hopefully we can get Ford to address this issue. Thank you.

This past weekend, we were driving our Ford F150 Lariat truck when we heard a loud bang (sounded like something hit the roof). There were no other vehicles or people around, so we just dismissed it. Later my husband noticed that the back window (left pane behind driver's side) was shattered. After reading these similar complaints, it is clear that this is a manufacturer defect and the cost should be covered by FORD!!

(P.S. - The day that we heard this loud bang, it was a very cold day and the rear window defroster was on.)

First day of frost in Seattle, which doesn't happen often here, started the truck and defrosted windshield and got about a mile from home and thought that someone had shot my truck or threw a big rock at it. I got out and looked around but didn't see the glass broken at the time. Left work and noticed that the passenger side rear glass panel had completely shattered, it was held in place because it was safety glass.

Very upset to see that this is happening to others as well. This should be considered a mfg defect.

rear window shattered

This is my second rear window. The first one just shorted out, but I had it replaced before it shattered. This one shorted out also, and since you still have to turn it on by default when using the heated mirrors, today it "popped" while the power was selected on. I also agree with most people that this is an obvious manufacturers defect and Ford should come clean and fix the problem.

rear window shattered rear window shattered rear window shattered

2010 F150 SCREW King Ranch 39,840 miles.

This morning I was heading to work. Had rear defroster on. Went about 3 miles and heard a large POP. I thought something fell on the roof!

I looked in the rear view and the passenger rear (right side glass) window was broken. Looked like a spider web. There was no outside indication of anything hitting the window.

Started searching the net and sure enough! Many others have had the EXACT same thing happen. Went to local Ford dealer and they said it’s Glass and not under Warranty. I complained to them, as well as CarMax who sold me an Extended Warranty. They said the same thing. We need a recall on these 2010's! Beware of your rear defroster!

Quoted $1,000 to replace complete rear window as it’s a 1 piece unit with Rear Defroster and Power Slide.

ALL are 2010's. Aparently there is a BIG problem with this.

What can I do to report properly and get manufacturer repair under warranty?

Thanks for your help.

rear window shattered

On my way to work this morning and put on rear defrost. Within a couple minutes heard a loud pop and then heard glass cracking. Got to work and noticed passenger rear window shattered. Looks like I'm not the only one that this has happened. Also looks like it won't be covered. Will be calling dealership soon. Should note that this did happen in summer while most cases have happened in the colder months.

Like many others, I was driving to work this morning in my 2010 Lariat and heard a loud pop. Shortly after, I heard a crackling sound. Looking back i could see my passengers side rear window next to the sliding window had shattered. I knew nothing could've hit it. I figured it had to be from having the defroster on (for only about 3 minutes) to the clear the haze on my windows. Upon searching the internet I found there are many complaints and all seem to be late model f150's with electronic rear sliding window. This sucks, cost me my deductible but at least my insurance covers it. This is definitely a defect and should be recalled.

I used my rear window defrosters for the first time. I heard a loud pop from the back of my truck while driving. Didn't notice until the next day. Saw shattered rear driver side window above my daughters car seat. Found online how this has happened to other people. Called dealership and they said it wasn't covered under warranty. They told me to contact Ford. I don't understand why this is not a recall! It is certainly a safety issue. My small children ride in the back of my truck.

rear window shattered

I turned my defroster on during a cold morning and while I was outside scrapping off my front windshield of frost my rear window shattered. I was nowhere near it and have never damaged the window in any way. It is clearly an issue which Ford needs to resolve and re-compensate to myself and the other people who had to pay for this out of their pocket. WAKE UP FORD, YOU HAVE AN ISSUE!!!

Have had the rear power window in my F150 Lariat shatter for the second time. Last year was the first time it happened, and it happened again yesterday. (Both times it was the back passenger side panel of glass) The Ford Dealer told me last year, that it wasn't covered, on my warranty or extended warranty, and the repair cost me $800.00.

Today, they mentioned that this has happened to enough trucks, that it will likely be covered under my extended warranty. I'll post an update, with any additional info received.

Driving on a cold morning with defroster on, the right rear window shattered in instant. Just coming on to a 400 series hwy in Ontario, like others on this site, I heard a loud bang, like someone hit my roof. But there was no one near me. I thought nothing off it until the ice melted on the outside window. After, when the driver's door closed, it pushed the cabin air making a 4" hole through the window, with 100's of shattered pieces on the cover. The whole window needed to be replaced at $800+.

The dealership did what it could by giving me good service and a discounted price, however this is a Ford known defect issue. Dealing with the Ford Customer service dept was no further help either. There is less then 43000km and passed the basic warranty (Feb 13) and my extended warranty does not cover glass. Ford should step up and financially assist with this problem.

We drive a 2010 f150. My wife was driving to work today and doing maybe 30 Kms an hour and all of a sudden she heard a loud pop noise in the truck. She looked around and realized the back slider window had all cracked. She call a glass place to see what it was going to cost to get replaced. The glass place said that we should call our local ford dealership and talk to them because there has been trouble with rear defrost and windows popping. We already had been having trouble with our rear defrost when we had warranty. But when warranty runs out they just say sh*ts to be you and we're not helping anymore. So needless to say when we talked to the local ford dealership over the cracked window nothing was done. We called ford canada to see if they could help and we were told that they really haven't heard of this happening but when we get our window fixed make sure we keep our receipt just in case there is a recall. So now I get screwed over again with ford. Just finished putting 1300 woth of work in it 3 mths ago and now this. The other problem we had with our truck they said never happens very often. We have driven many ford vehicles but we definitly will be going elsewhere next time. Ford can kiss our business goodbye

Tried to go through dealer and called Ford directly and they will not cover to repair this. Obviously this a bad defect. This is my first Ford and am not really happy on how they are handling this. It seems I am not the only that this has happened too.

This is the second time my back window has shattered... Firt time I was driving on the highway and I heard it pop it sounded like a gun shot. The cost to fix it was $800.00 which was not covered.

The second time happened a few days ago. I got into my truck to start it up and go to work and looked in the rear view and my drivers side rear window was shattered. looking at another 800.00 to fix???? thats $1600.00 in total. I am beyond pissed...!!!

Approximately a year ago the rear window of my 2010 F150 Supercab shattered while turning into a driveway. I brought the problem to the attention of the dealer who stated it was not under warranty. They arranged a contractor to fix the problem at my expense. The small window is part of a complex sliding window system which necessitated taking out the rear seat to gain access to replace the window. The cost was $750.00 plus HST. This occurred in summertime under normal driving conditions. I believed it was due to stress of the frame of the window acting on the window pane.

On February 6, 2014 I left the Park 'N Fly Parking Lot at Toronto's Pearson Airport and entered Airport Road. I heard a loud crack noise but could not identify the cause. Upon starting my vehicle this afternoon (Friday February 8, 2014) I noted the rear window panel behind the driver's seat was shattered with the pieces still in place. There is obviously a serious defect in the design of this model which is otherwise an excellent vehicle. Both times the vehicle was being operated under normal driving conditions at slow speeds.

rear window shattered

My two grandsons were in the back seat. My wife turned on the rear window defrost as it was cold and snowing. approx. 15 minutes from the time the defrost was turned on, there was an extremely loud bang. So loud that my grandson lost his hearing for a time and complained his ear hurt. The boys thought someone shot a gun. unfortunately, I am out of warranty.
