Like everyone else here, it bangs when coming to a stop or in stop-and-go traffic. I've owned the truck since new, it's done it since new. The transmission gets the full flush and fill (The Pennzoil maintenance program) every 30,000. Nothing helps. Up-shifting is problem-free at any throttle setting/at any load. My best guess is the torque converter lock-up function is not disengaging properly. I've had this happen on my GM and Chrysler vehicles, so It's little wonder Ford is having issues too. Thank the EPA for screwing up your truck once again.

The problem started soon after I got the truck, I would ask them to fix it every time I took the truck to be serviced and they would say that it was normal but that they would check it, needless to say they didn't fix it and the problem just has gotten worse. This is going to be my last Ford since it is not the only one of their vehicles I've had problems with. ( I guess when they say it is normal they mean that when we buy one of their trucks we should expect to have transmission problems and live with them)

Same problem everyone else has. Hard shifting while hot or cold. While coasting then to the gas pedal there is a bang when it shifts into gear. Downshifting while the cruise control is on is awful. Been to the dealership twice with no help . Get worse mpg as well now.

Update from Jan 11, 2014: Still shifting hard at 75,000 miles. Taken to Ford 4 times now. Still can't fix it.

I HAVE HAD THIS TRUCK FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TRANS ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I GOT THE TRUCK. THE FORD DEALER SAID THEY HAD ADJUSTED THE TRANS AND IT WOULD BE NO PROBLEM. BUT IT STILL IS A PROBLEM. NOW THEY SAY THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. BUT, WHEN I'M COMING TO A STOP, SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE RUNS INTO THE BACK OF MY TRUCK AND THERE IS NO ONE THERE.

THEY WERE HAPPY TO TAKE IT AND WORK ON IT WHEN IT WAS UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY. NOW THAT IT IS ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY, THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME THE $50 OR $75 FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT AND TELL ME THAT THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS.

AT FIRST THEY WOULD HELP ME WITH RENTAL CAR. NOW I'M ON MY OWN. THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE AND GETTING WORSE. THE WAY I SEE IT, THEY KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM BUT DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT. SO THEY ARE HOPING YOU RUN OUT OF WARRANTY BEFORE IT COMES APART SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR IT. THEN THEY WILL JUST SAY" MAN YOU NEED A NEW TRANS."

AT THIS POINT I FEEL THE ONLY THING I CAN DO IS KEEP DRIVING IT TILL IT FALLS OUT. I HAVE ALL THE SERVICES DONE AT THE DEALERSHIP TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW THAT I'M HAVING THEM ALL DONE. IT JUST HAS BECOME A PAIN IN THE BUTT TO SAY THE LEAST. IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

took to local dealer and they did a reset on transmission. did not fix it. took it to another local dealer and they said since i had it reset there was nothing they could do more. took it back to dealer i purchased it from and they said they would take it for a test drive and see if it would hard shift. it did, they said since the transmission had been reset they could not do anything more but suggested it needed to set to my driving habit. funny thing it started working just fine for about 6 months and it's doing it again just like before. great truck but don't like this problem.

When you're driving and come to a stop sign and slow down to almost stopping and give it the gas, the truck must be in second gear and has to down shift to first and it's real jumpy. But if you stop dead, with no movement, it takes with no problem.

Transmission shifts hard when accelerating at operating tempature. Dealership re-flashed the transmission and said it would take up to 2 weeks for it to learn my driving habits. This seemed to help for about 6 or 8 weeks. Now the hard shift is back. The Dealership doesn’t know what to do and neither does FORD evidently. They tell me that they are working on it. I will believe it when I get it fixed.

Update from May 2, 2012: Update: 45,700 miles. Same problem with the 6R80 transmission. Been thru 2 re-flashes of PCM, Seal Replacement on PCM, at least 8 visits to the dealer, Countless phone calls to FORD Tech and Customer Relations with no resolution. The Service Manager at the Dealership says the BANG is not normal, but the Ford Tech Line, which is who know how many miles away behind a computer, say the "firm shift is normal to prevent slipage and damage to the transmission." Next step is the Field Service Rep for Ford will drive my truck to determine if the BANG is normal. Will update afterwords.

It seems that ford has big problem with the f150 trans. my 2010 has the same clunking. when stopping though i was rear ended.dealer has advised me to call factory to set up test drive.time will tell?

Update from Nov 11, 2011: just giving a up date on my 2010 f150 transmission by asking other f150 owners if they have the same problem i found that the transmission is a variable learning transmission it learns YOUR driving habits and back pressures. well when i put dual exhaust on guess what? the transmission did know what too do.like i said in my complaint it down shifted hard like some one rear ended me after i had stopped.I talk the service dept in to resetting the transmission to like it was new. so far so good, hope this keeps working & helps i love my ford truck and don't wont too buy any other brand

This is a common problem. There's a service bulletin from Ford called "Slip-Bump" - When mine did it, I thought I got rear-ended but no one was behind me. Dealer had to replace driveshaft boots and change the grease on the driveshaft splines. When towing or heavy loading, the splines squeegie off the grease under compression and eventually get dry. They then stick and BANG when they release. It's an easy fix that takes about 2 hours. This feels like a transmission problem but it is not.

Truck started shifting hard from 2 to 1 upon coming to a stop and when taking off from a stop. Initially I thought it was the rear brakes activating and deactivating out of sequence from the front brakes, but soon realized it was a transmission problem. I took the truck to Philpott Ford in Nederland, TX and they reflashed the computer and told me over the next 500 miles the transmission would need to 'learn' my driving style. The problem seemed to be a little better but could still be felt. After the 500 miles was up I took the truck to Energy Country Ford in Port Arthur, TX and the technician kept the truck over night to feel the transmission cold. He performed the reflash again, and still felt the clunk from 2 to 1. He called Ford and they stated that this was a normal characteristic of this vehicle and they recommended that he try a different vehicle of the same model. The technician was able to replicate the symptom in that vehicle as well. Nothing more was able to be done; the technician said at least my problem was in the system and if Ford decided to take more action I would be covered. Now I see others on this site where there transmission has completely failed. I am really disappointed, I love this truck and the Ford Motor Company; I am worried now.

F-150 FX2 5.4

  • Manual transmission
  • 16,000 miles

I have a 2010 Ford F150 Crew FX2 5.4. It is at the dealership right now with issues of the transmission slamming as it shifts down from 2nd to 1st.

At first the dealership stated they would need to re-flash the software, but I received a call today that they are going to have to drop the tranny to fix the problem. Based of what I have been reading it seems to be an issue with the new 6 speed automatic trans.

Anyone have any other experience with this? If so, did they get it corrected?

Update from Dec 5, 2010: The problem has been "fixed", so we hope!!! They replaced with a new transmission.
