steer column issues
I noticed the steering was notchy and difficult. I turned out to be an issue with the u-joints in the steering column. According to one mechanic (not a Ford tech) this is a common problem and seems tone a Ford design to sell parts. Prior to this design, steering shafts rarely had to be replaced because slight bends in the steering mechanism were accommodated with rubber blocks. Now the tiny u-joints cannot be greased so they wear out.
I never had it replaced and continue to spray lubricant on the steering shaft and u-joints periodically. It now needs replacing but I'm getting rid of the truck so I'm not going to worry about it.
