When we bought the truck the garage knew there was a problem with the parking brake and they fixed it. It worked for about a month and I took it to our local garage and they said that to fix the problem would be too expensive until they get everything off to get to the part they need to get to...too many things would be worn and rusted and could deteriorate real quick. We were told that being an automatic that it didn't need a parking brake, that the gears would hold it fine...we were also told that we did not need it for inspection...in January 2014 that same garage passed it for inspection with a parking brake that did not work.
Looking into it just recently after the trucks planetary gear gave out and the truck almost ran over my husband while putting our boat in the water (total loss due to the water when it went into the river) I looked into if the parking brake was actually required...the DMV in Pennsylvania says that it is required to work on at least a 20% grade...it did not work at all.
