The contact owns a 2000 Ford F150. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph when smoke was emitted from under the hood. The contact and the driver exited the vehicle and then noticed flames coming from under the hood. The driver was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher and the fire department did not report to the scene. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where the technicians stated there was an electrical shortage in the master cylinder that caused the fire. The insurance company stated that an inspector would investigate the vehicle to determine if the vehicle could be repaired or would be deemed as destroyed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
The consumer stated that the vehicle caught fire due to a defect in the master cylinder. The vehicle did catch fire under the hood. The vehicle was out of warranty.
The vehicle was parked in the car port when it caught fire. The fire was caused by the master cylinder plug which caused brake fluid to leak on the manifold.
