This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
When it was below freezing vehicle revved up to 6000 RPM. Vehicle had been to the dealer three times. Dealer changed the throttle body, idle control valve, and the throttle cable. Dealer also disconnected the cruise control and consumer hasn't experienced surging on the vehicle.
While backing out of a parking space at 8 mph the vehicle suddenly accelerated backwards up to 60 mph. The shifter was moved drive and the vehicle continued to accelerate forward. The brakes would not stop the vehicle. As a result the vehicle slammed into an embankment. Vehicle was taken to the dealer where the replaced the mass air glow sensor and throttle assembly. The bed of the truck was pushed outward on the passenger side. The dealer cleaned and lubed the latches. The passenger side striker was shimmed and adjusted.
Set cruise control on 70mph, after approx. 2 miles I tapped the brakes to disengage the cruise control and nothing happened, tried three more time without any response. Tried to turn off the cruise control by hitting the off button but still didn't get any response. Put both feet on brake pedal and stood on the brake but it barely slowed the truck down. Finally had to turn the ignition off and coast to a stop. I restarted the truck several times but cruise was still set. I finally disconnected the cruise control from the throttle body in order to continue my trip.
While driving at 60 mph, consumer turned on cruise control and when trying to turn it off, vehicle malfunctioned, vehicle was stuck in cruise control. Contacted dealer who was not willing to do anything. Consumer turned off ignition to see if the cruise control would shut off, when turning ignition back on, the motor raced up to 60 mph again.
Suden jump in idle speed(TO3000)RPM.dangerous to hold vehicle stopped in snow. Transmission does not downshift to low gear till rmp drops below 1000. Dangerous to stop vehicle. Foot must be applied firmly on brake pedal at traffic lights for the duration of the stop for fear of vehicle lurching forward and hitting car in front. Dealer said he fixed. Problem still present. Very objectionable odor in vehicle( like burning off old oil deposits on metal) present at times. Unbearable to an asthmatic person. Vehicle otherwise in sound shape.
Approximately 6:45 P.M. est on June 14, 2001 I was traveling at 58 mph when I deployed the cruise control. I proceeded for about 4 miles when I went to disengage the cruise control. I applied the brakes but it would not disengage. I shut off the cruise control switch and it still would not come out of cruise control. After riding the brakes for a couple of miles I managed to get off an exit off of route 1 in chester county, pa., pulled the truck over to the shoulder and, put it in neutral and quickly turned off the ignition. Much smoke came out from under the hood because the brakes were overheated. I pulled the fuse and restared the vehicle. It rev'd to "red" line". I quickly turned off the ignition. Had truck towed to faulkner Ford in chadds Ford, pa. They found the cruise control cable pressed against the throttle. I asked if there was a recall on this. The response was "no, it was a fluke. It happened to be you." I am lucky to be alive after this harrowing experience. I am not pleased with how this dealership handled this incident.
Consumer noticed that throttle was sticking, took to dealer, who ordered parts for it. When parts arrived, they did not fix vehicle. Dealer called Ford technical hotline. Dealer was told not to release vehicle, that it was a design error, and to give consumer a loaner vehicle. Ford gave consumer no indication when he would get his vehicle back.
The vehicle accelerated to 70 mph and would not decelerate, brakes would not work and when the vehicle was put into neutral, the rpms increased to 3000, the transmission shifted heavily and vehicle began to run normally, on one occasion the consumer had to shut the vehicle completely off.
While warming transmission was released while applying brakes, and vehicle took off. After 20 feet vehicle hit a house, and air bags deployed. Dealer has been contacted.
The reported failure was the 2nd time. The truck keeps accelerating until the accelerator is manually pulled up, by hand. This is a life threatening situation.
While pressing the clutch pedal, then moving the pawl to neutral, vehicle suddenly accelerated without a warning. Consumer had to turn off the ignition key to stop vehicle.
