This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The trim around my windshield fell off while driving. I called a local ford store, Ed Martin Ford in Anderson, Indiana and was told the current recall does not cover this.
While driving my 2017 Ford Explorer, There was a smell of burnt oil/tire entering my vehicle through the vents. I took it in to the Ford Dealership and I was advised that I needed a brand new transfer case, and the front engine mounts needed to be replaced due to broken seals. This was causing transmission fluid to leak onto other parts (hot) which was causing the smell while I was driving. My vehicle is at 89,000 miles, and if I don't get this replaced, then it will cause transmission failure. I was told that this should not happen on a vehicle with 89,000 miles. The leaking fluid can also cause a fire under the hood. When asked why or how this could happen, I was told it just wasn't "built" well. Cost of repairs will be about $4,500. WOW.
When it rains, water leaks from the lights, seatbelts and dome lights. The water collects on the passenger floorboard front and rear and collects in the spare tire well. The car is now starting to mold this winter. We have brought the car in past years to be fixed with the Ford dealership not able to fix the reason for the leaking. yes, this car is available for inspection. The car is forming mold spores inside and we are unable to park under cover. It is potential for making us sick. Ford could not find a source of how to fix the water leak.
Driver side window button does not work. All others do. There is no reason this should not work on a car with so few miles 18,700 and less than 7 years old.
Front windshield rubber trim is disintegrating, dry rotted and cracked throughout, separating from windshield, pieces about to fly off. Vibrates and makes sound when driving 55 mph or more.
Car wouldn't start. All the water had run out due to coolent leak near water pump and in finding it they found leak near front engine mount. These are problems that other 2017 explorer owners have also complained about online. In addition, Kirkland Ford stated they are backed up on repairing the toe link and roof repair due to lack of certified mechanics. The 2017 whole vehicle should have been recalled due to the cheap parts used which has caused me to continually go in to have recalls fixed. While there they end up causing more issues causing me thousands in repair bills. I have scheduled with independent car repair shop for them to give me estimate of repairing the above items for January 10 the first date they had available.
The rubber windshield trim is detaching from the windshield, causing a loud rattling/vibrating noise inside the vehicle. This issue also allows debris to get between the windshield and the windshield frame, causing even further damage.
The gasket/seal surrounding the windshield on the passenger side front windshield was breaking off in sections. I had the dealer look at it while it was in the shop for some other recall work since I had only noticed it the day or so before. I was told it was the Pillar Moulding was coming apart but it was not a covered item. (Oct 2022) and the gasket itself was a wear and tear item. The gasket has continued to come off and has now caused the windshield to leak substantially.
In 2019 the Front Passenger B Pillar came loose and flew off while driving, this has been repaired. In 2022 the windshield A pillar came loose and had been repaired by myself. Now in 2023 the Front Driver B Pillar is coming loose and is pending repair. There is an existing safety report for these same issues, PE 23-001.
Windshield trim flew off on the freeway going 65mph causing damage to a vehicle behind me. This problem has been reported to my nearest ford dealership.
windshield molding is falling apart. Windshield cowl fell apart and had to be replaced. Now rest of molding falling apart, as well as interior door molding.
The side Window Molding and mounting panel broke off while driving. When it broke off it could have hit a person or vehicle causing significant injury or damage, luckily it just narrowly missed the vehicle in the lane next to us. As this broke off while we were driving on the freeway we were unable to stop and retrieve the piece. Additionally, the molding along the side windows on the front doors is starting to detach. I'm seriously nervous to even drive this car anywhere because pieces seem to be randomly detaching and breaking off.
I was driving the speed limit on the thruway and my passenger side windshield outer trim flew off of my vehicle! It almost hit the vehicle behind me and cause myself and the vehicle behind me to swerve as it happened so suddenly it was startling.
Windshield rubber trim has almost entirely come off. I'm concerned that the plastic trim is next. You can hear the air coming into the car through the gap and now during a heavy rainstorm on 95 I had water coming into the vehicle. I spoke to the dealership where I have the vehicle serviced when it first happened and told them I had read on the Ford Owners forum that this was a known problem and still no recall. At that time I was told it would cost hundreds of dollars to replace. I didn't have the funds then, and I don't have them now but I am forced to repair it at my expense because it is very dangerous and getting worse.
