Full tank to 3/4 of gas, extreme odor of gas. Found gasoline escaped from top of tank at gasket/retaining ring of sending unit. Ford mechanic who repaired unit stated the gasket/ring was completely cracked causing the gas and fumes to escape. Critical issue is the tank is in proximity to the exhaust system, which could have caused a fire either while driving or when parked. - Repairs completed at Ford Dealership ($1554.). Much of the charge was labor, as to drop the tank, the drive shaft and exhaust needed to be removed. Initially a conversation with Ford Customer Service was that they'd possibly help out with the repair cost (mileage 110,000), and to have a Ford garage inspect it. The dealership contacted FoMoCo who then refused any assistance (which they also turned me down on a follow up call) stating the mileage was over 100-K. Complaint filed with NHTSA, as this is a critical safety issue.
