Went to go to work yesterday morning and found this (see attached picture). At first I thought I had been vandalized but thought it was strange how it appeared and therefore "googled" to see if this was a common random occurrence. I was relieved to find out that it wasn't an act of vandalism but ticked off to find out that is is a very common flaw with Ford Explorers - that the back window randomly shatters on it own (more in the 2017 version on this site) and Ford should have been recalling these for years apparently. I was not in my vehicle when it happened but it appears that others were not so lucky. Such loud noises could cause serious accidents and the manufacturer should be responsible!
Driving down a regular street with no one around, we heard a loud pop and I looked back to my back window shattered. Looked like frosted glass. When I got out to take photos pieces started to fall out. Purchased car pre-owned 6 months ago from dealership. (this was still original back windshield) They wanted me to pay full price for it even though they had another explorer in THAT MORNING that had the same issue. $550 to replace.
I contacted Ford Canada and they opened a case number which would take 4 days to escalate to the dealership for review. The dealership does not want to return my phone calls about this issue anymore. So I currently have no back windshield and its supposed to be -30 outside tomorrow...YAY!
Today I pulled in the driveway after work and a loud explosion went off, the rear windshield of our 2016 Ford Explorer Limited Edition shattered. Do not know what Ford will do. Hunters, Gooderham, Ontario
I purchased a 2016 ford explorer, sport and yesterday for no reason the back window smashed to pieces. I am taking it to the dealer and from reading prior articles I see this has in fact been an issue. The service tech I spoke to at the dealer claimed he had never heard of anything like this before when I mentioned that this was a fault in the vehicle and there was no damage done to my car previously. It was parked outside overnight on a very cold night, and when I went to open the window it crumbled to pieces.
I expect Ford will fix this and not charge me for the repair or I will be pretty pissed off. There was no chip, damage or other issues with the window prior to it just crumbling to pieces. Thankfully I was not driving and my child was not in the vehicle at the time.
We will see what Ford does about this as I will be taking it in on Monday with a print out of the other articles I have found noting this is a known problem.
Date this happened: Saturday March 4, 2017. I have just under 40k km's on the vehicle and have had no accidents, chips or damage to the vehicle to compromise the rear window.
