This has been a really good vehicle but it is way too early in mileage to have the ptu fail. My search so far has the problem being over heating due to the close proximity to the exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter. It is blowing out oil on my garage floor. Poor design. Ford recognizes the issue and is now installing coolers on the newer models.
Noticed a leak, took it to the Ford Dealer and they diagnosed it as needing a new Power Take Off. Our Limited Explorer only had 84K miles on it and cost us 2094.00. Seems this is a common problem with these units on these vehicles. This is very unfortunate as we had always been a Honda family and decided to support Ford, only to have this happen and not be covered under any warranty. So beware if you decide to purchase a Ford Explorer.
2014 Dealer Driven Ford Explorer. Bought in 2017 and given an extended warranty. At 80,000 miles, the PTU goes out. Warranty ran out 7 months ago. $2200 to fix it. Ford should be recalling these vehicles for this problem. Per Ford Dealerships, this is a big problem with these Explorers! I have been a Ford Explorer fan for many years, and this is my third one. My 2002 Explorer had 300,000 miles on it and NEVER did the PTU go out on it! Severely disappointed in no recall for this huge EXPENSIVE problem!!!!!!!
Vehicle is at 57000 mileage and encountered a PTU (power transfer unit) issue. My vehicle brought all the time to Ford dealership and they never notified me that any leakage observed as they DO NOT work proactive or may be were waiting to expire the warranty first. Luckily, I brought my vehicle to close by mechanic to check the breaks and they observed the leakage under the body and asked to examine ASAP. They said, it’s cannot be happened overnight, and your dealership MUST tell you ahead of time when it started. Anyway, make the long story short, I’m in a situation where warranty is just finished, and vehicle has ended with PTU (Power Transfer Unit) oil leaked/ failure.
We brought our Ford Explorer to Tower Ford because of an exhaust recall. After Ford looked at our truck, they told us the PTU had to be replaced and it would cost $1800.00. Our truck only has 56,240 miles. When I looked up to check on the price, I have noticed many Ford products have this problem. I think this is a problem that Ford needs to take care of. It really annoys me that we just payed our last payment on the car and already we have problems. We are senior citizens, we take care of our truck and we get regular oil changes. We always have our truck checked out. This should not be happening. I think the next truck we pick will not be a Ford.

THERE IS 68850 MILES ON THE CAR. WE AND OUR FAMILY HAVE PURCHASED FIVE VEHICLES FROM THIS DEALERSHIP IN THE PAST FOUR YEARS. THEY HAVE AGREED TO GIVE US A 10% DISCOUNT ON THE JOB. NEITHER FORD NOR THE DEALERSHIP ARE WILLING TO ADMIT THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS POOR DESIGN AND STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND ABSORB MORE OF THIS COST. I DOUBT i WANT TO BUY ANOTHER NEW CAR FROM THEM.
FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, BUT JUST LIKE THEY DID ON THE PINTO FIASCO WHERE PEOPLE ACTUALLY DIED, THEY FIND IT CHEAPER TO PAY THE JUDGEMENT ON THE CLASS ACTION THAN WIN THE LOYALTY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS. WE WILL JOIN THE CLASS ACTION WHEN IT BECOMES A CASE.
I got stuck in wet grass and only the front wheels were turning. My helper verified that the rear wheels never spun like the front wheels were. I ended up having to call a wrecker to pull me out. Talked to a mechanic who works on county police cars (mostly the same vehicle as mine) and he told me that this a common problem with the Ford PTU's and he has replaced several of them.
I think there should be a recall notice for this problem. The Ford garage acted like they never heard of any problems with them. It took them a whole day, and I had to leave it overnight, for them to tell me that the PTU is bad and they can't tell me when the part will be in. I had to rent a car to get home and they said they won't pay for the rental car.
The good news is that it happened before the 60 K mile / 5 year power train warranty is over. Otherwise the PTU is over $1000 plus labor.
Second time I've replaced a Ford transmission at about 80,000 miles....Ford wouldn't stand behind it saying their sorry, I didn't buy the extended warranty.
Really disgusted here. How can a PTU ( power transfer unit) not be covered under the power train warranty? This I don't understand at all? Plus I have seen other PTUs going bad now online from other fords, also not covered for some reason? How can all these PTUs go bad & not be covered? Is this just a game for Ford? Don't they want to provide a solid product where people will come back & buy again from them in the future? I have never been "off road" with this car & mostly highway miles. Now I have to wait 2 days before a CSM person responds to my complaint in this day & age? Guess they have a lot of problems out there?
