I noticed while pulling out of my driveway turning either left or right that the front end has a clicking/clunking noise. I will be taking it to the dealer this week to find out the damage because of course like everything else, it won't be under warranty! I drive 8 miles to and from work 5 days a week. I still find it very hard to believe this is happening to a 5 year old car! I had a 2002 Ford Mustang for 12 years and never had any problems, and is still going strong as my mom now drives it. She has a 97 Explorer with no problems... I have no idea what's going on with these new cars, but it's very disappointing! Especially when it cost around $40k!!!
This car has had quite a few issues, but most were covered under the warranty. However, about a week ago we started hearing clunking noises when turning left and right. Brought it in to the dealership and they say I need a new steering gear and right and left tie rods. This is incredibly frustrating after on 70k miles. Looks like 2011-2013 years were covered as a recall. Not sure that it looks like they got the issue fixed. Don't think I can trust another Explorer at this time.
When pulling into a parking lot, the front end started popping when turning the steering wheel. It pops when turning left or right with the car rolling or when parked. Problem has persisted all week. I cannot pinpoint and it is intermittent. On several occasions, the steering wheel seemed to lock up for a second then release. Traded the explorer in because it brakes too much. We've had nothing but problems since day one. This was the final straw so we bought a Toyota.
Now 3 months later the noise in the front started up , only worse. Took it in, and they took 3 days to analyse and finally decided it was the streering rack, $1400 plus labour to put a new one in. I told them I was not going to spend something like that when it should be covered under the drive train warranty, which the vehicle is still under. As I said in the beguining, I am going to dump this vehicle and go back to a Chevy Tahoe.. Ford do not stand behind the products, their Dealerships are dictitoriial , and I am just fed up with the quality of the Ford product. If you look up Ford issues on the Internet, they are numerous.
