When going at a constant speed on the highway and then accelerating, the transmission occasionally lags and then slams with a bang and a lurch. It happened rarely at first and I thought "Wow, Ford still hasn't gotten this right!" after having several fords in the 1970s and 80s. It has gotten worse and worse, so that I have to accelerate very slowly, and lane changes to pass are almost impossible. I should have had it looked at but it seemed minor when it started happening, and I had so many repairs that I couldn't deal with more time in the shop. My bad.

If I let off the gas just before the transmission shifts into third gear, it sometimes is very clunky. You can actually feel it slam into gear.

Explorer Limited 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,000 miles

We have been dealing with our 2013 explorer shifting hard basically since we bought the vehicle. We have taken it into the dealer many times for this issue and all they have done is try to reprogram the computer to get it to shift better. This works for a couple of weeks and then it is right back to the way it was before when we brought it into the dealership.

In the last year or so the vehicle has also developed a slip between 2nd gear and 3rd gear. It seems as if the computer doesn't know what gear it wants the transmission in so the computer shifts it into 3rd but then for a split second it shifts it back to 2nd then back to 3rd. It is hard to explain but it feels like the transmission is going to fail when it does it. We have also brought this into the dealership and they once again just try reprogramming the computer.

This is our first new vehicle and have been very disappointed with the quality of the vehicle. This is our main family vehicle and I worry about its reliability when my wife drives it. Also I am concerned with how long it is going to last. It only has 55,000 on it right now I am considering just selling it to not have to deal with its issues.
