My daughter’s 2012 Explorer experienced this about 2 months ago. Ford covered her repair. Then I had it occur the day after a long trip. Fortunately this occurred with both cars on start up in our home driveways, not on the road!!! But Ford says my car is not covered under the recall. I don’t have $1,600 to fix the danged thing, so now it’s just sitting in front of the house on the shoulder of the street, where it was when the problem first occurred. I do most of my own repairs, but this is beyond my capabilities due to the ability to even move it to a location where I can get it up on jack stands. Plus, I’ve had both shoulders replaced in the last 3 years and don’t have the strength to do this work anymore. I don’t have a clue what to do now. Ford was good enough to tell me how to report it to the NHTSA to see if it can be added to the recall, but how long will that take? I called them immediately but I haven’t heard a thing since then.
Ford Group Philippines covered the initial replacement of the Steering Gear DB5Z3504PE under goodwill warranty. After 17 months upon replacement and 15,848 kilometers, the Steering Gear DB5Z3504PE needs to be replaced again under my own expense.
I believe the Steering Gear DB5Z3504PE has been defective from the beginning. No matter how many times Ford replaces it, it will prematurely fail. The amount here in the Philippines for the Steering Gear is approximately US$5,000 or Php275,000 to be exact. In peso terms, the price of Php275,000 for the Steering Gear DB5Z3504PE is 10.95% of the original value.
I need help by compiling anyone's service records indicating the Steering Gear DB5Z3504PE has been replaced to help build a case against Ford Group Philippines.
We brought our vehicle into Ford dealership, they could not figure out the problem the first time. They said they fixed it, however the problem was still very much there. It was even louder now. Sounds similar to bad or broken shocks. Anyway, I asked my husband to drop the vehicle off, as I noticed the steering was and had been acting weird - even mentioning this both times to dealer - of which I became suspicious that the problem -they said was fixed - was never fixed.
Anyway, he brought it back and it turned out to be what we said it was the FIRST time we dropped it off. They charged us a diagnostic fee the first time. The second time they tried charging us again! I told them I am not paying it, as they did not diagnose what the problem was the first time. They obliged. So, after they told us the cost to replace the part, which is outrageous, and even more so that something like this can fail in the early years.
I decided to go online and investigate. It turns out there was a recall on this part! I called the dealership and asked them why they didn't look it up and why they're trying to charge us over 2k! The lady apologized and said to bring it in and they'll first try and reprogram, if that doesn't work they will replace. I explained to her that we travel one of the most dangerous highways in Vancouver, BC, and if the steering fails and we go off the highway because of their oversight, that could be big problems for everyone! God forbid that should happen, and hopefully he is on our side, until they can get us in.
I am floored that they haven't made any recommendations. Didn't look it up for recalls. And, are trying to charge us for a problem that is a huge safety issue in this make/ model. I am thankful that we have not lost control of steering in this vehicle yet. God be on our side.

I started the engine at about 5:30 am. Atmospheric temperature was about 35C+. When the engine was on, immediately an alarm came up say (power steering failure). I tried to turn the steering wheel, but it was frozen. Turned the engine off, and opened the hood. Found nothing. Started the engine again and the steering was fine.
The car is in Arctic Bay with only 1500 km and we can't drive it. It cost thousands to get it up here and we can't get it back. Very expensive failure. We need a fix.
