Vehicle fills will strong smell of exhaust usually when entering freeway or 3/4 to wot situations(passing etc.) at other times vehicle seems to build smell of exhaust idling. I have taken the vehicle after first purchased to Ford and they say there is nothing wrong. Having seen current reports of similar concerns with police and consumer vehicles I wanted to report and confirm the same issue in a non police Explorer. This has been constantly happening for years.
As I was driving down the road, my left windshield cladding flew off of my 2013 Ford Explorer without warning or accident. The car behind me almost was in an accident swerving to avoid it. This is evidently a common problem as there are multiple cases of this happening on the Explorer from what I've seen on multiple forums. I went to my local Ford dealership to discuss with them and they basically told me tough luck and they couldn't repair it. What" really" I evidently have to go to a glass shop, buy the pieces from Ford at a cost of $400, yes that is $400. They couldn't even point me in the direction of a glass shop but were happy to take my money for something that costs a total of $90 online as they told me 'don't trust parts ordered online' but oddly enough I should trust parts manufactured by Ford when they created the original piece and bracket that holds it(which I also have to replace as it broke as well) that flew off at 60 mph.
On Nov 5th, a sulfuric odor was detected in the cabin of the vehicle for a brief period. On Nov 6th, the same odor was detected in and around the vehicle with much more strength than the previous day. On Nov 13th, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and repair. The vehicle was returned on the 13th stating a known tsb has been implemented (the tsb number was not disclosed). Upon driving the vehicle home (approx 25 miles), the sulfuric odor was still present. Driver experienced dizziness near the end of the commute home. On Nov 15th, driver's spouse was driving the vehicle and reported the same sulfuric odor and experienced a headache after approximately 25 minutes of being in the vehicle. Both drivers experienced the odor while stationary as well as in motion. Both drivers were driving in a mix of city and highway driving.
Driver door ajar sensor remains on even though door is securely closed, even on repeat attempts to close the door. This causes the doors not to lock and allows doors to be opened even when car is in motion.

When the engine is "gunned" or when the rpms are high (when speeding up quickly), an exhaust smell is noticed in the cabin. We have a preemie infant and a 3 year old, and are very worried about the effects this may have on them. This has happened several times. Most recent incident was 10/21/17
I purchased my used 2013 Ford Explorer from ken garff Ford in St. George Utah in February 2017. At first I noticed a smell, similar to a propane smell, coming from the heating system. Then I noticed it was really bad when the car was idling. Then it got worse when the weather warmed up and I used the air conditioning. We had to roll the windows down to air it out. It was making me sick. It seems to be the worse when it is accelerating and when it is idling. I took it to ken garff Ford in St. George Utah and they replaced some of the exhaust system. They said they replaced the same parts that they had replaced for the entire law enforcement Explorer in our county (Washington county, ut) it cost me over 500 dollars. It did not fix it. It seemed to be worse.they have now ordered more parts and said it will cost me over 500 dollars again. That's over $1,000 so far. And over the last six month I have had headaches almost every day. I am known to have migraines but this is now extreme. My doctor cannot understand why I was now having so many headaches and many more migraines. Now that I know the Explorer has fume issues I believe it is the fumes from the car that are causing the headaches and make me feel sick so often. I finally researched online if the repairs are working and it seems that fixing it the way Ford has told the dealers to fix it that the response is that it does not solve the problem. I agree having put money into it already and it actually seems worse. I do not want to sink more money into it and I feel that I should not have to pay for the repairs if the repairs do work. Also my job requires that I travel a lot and I usually put over 20,000 a year on my vehicles. I can not continue to drive the car and to feel so sick when I do. Please advice. Thank you,
The car has had consistent odor penetration into the passenger cabin since I bought it in October 2012. There is a sulfur-like or rotten-egg smell...almost like natural gas. More recently I am also getting a separate odor of burning oil. The smell is most present when the car's windows are all up and the A/C system is on. The oil smell is also noticeable outside the vehicle. I am concerned that this could be related to the well-publicized issue with police versions of the Ford Explorer. I am also concerned that the fumes could be toxic and I am being exposed for long periods of time to potential carcinogens.
Today, I was driving down the highway with my ac on and began to smell a strong odor of fuel. As I drove the smell got stronger. I finally got to my destination 10 minutes later and felt sick and had a headache.
The smell of exhaust fumes are present inside the vehicle cabin during trips. This is causing headaches and nauseous feelings after being in the vehicle for extended trips longer than half an hour.
Extremely bad exhaust fumes in car. Brought to Ford and was told I had grass in my engine, I said bs. Brought back again and was told its under review. Making me light headed while I drive. Have to drive with my windows down all the time just so my kids don't smell it. Seems the longer I drive the worst it gets.
A strong exhaust odor exists in the cabin area during moderate and hard acceleration. The odor is noxious and requires the windows to be opened to vent it out.
My 2013 Ford Explorer Sport has an awful, rotten egg smell inside the cabin, every time I press on the gas for quick acceleration. It happens every single time on quick acceleration. Smells gaseous. I'm afraid that carbon monoxide or other gases are leaked into the cabin somehow, when I press on the gas pedal. I'm afraid that even when I'm not doing a quick acceleration, gases are still leaking in, yet harder to detect. Many times I have gotten terrible headaches during long distances of driving. I have gotten nausea feeling as well as light headedness multiple times as well. I'm very worried. The most scary thing is that I have a 4 year old, and a pregnant girlfriend with a due date in December 2017. I will be devastated if anything happens to them. Ford in tallahassee, Florida has told me that there is no recall on anything like I am describing, and that I would be charged to have it looked at. And then another charge for parts/labor. I don't have the funds to pay them an outrageous fee to try and diagnose the problem. When you buy a newer car, you shouldn't have to worry about breathing in toxic gases inside the cabin, that could kill you or someone you love. I don't know what to do. Please help me.
I've noticed this smell every time I turned my car on/off or would get finished driving. It would be in the drivers cabin down at the floor where it came from. I first noticed it there and had mentioned it to Ford when there for service. It smells like a natural gas ( like at home ) leak. I'd smell it if he air or heat was on bringing it into the cabin. The same smell would be present when I stopped driving and would op N the door. Smelled like it was coming from under the drivers side wheel area. It persisted for the last few years. I've told Ford many times but they say there's no recall. Or that my car was out of its manufacturers warranty. At the time in 2014, when I really took notice, my car was still under warranty. I bought my car out of its lease in 6 OR7/2016 and there were reports of exhaust issues with people having a smell on the cabin. Ironic that I've been complaining of this two years prior to it coming out in the news. When asked, I was unsure to buy a car with exhaust issues, they reassured me there were no active recalls. And that the exhaust wasn't a problem. I thought I had roadkill rotting under my car, but after numerous under carriage car washes and theee years later, the car still has that natural gas smell.
Engine exhaust enters vehicle interior when rpms go over 3,000 and continues to come into the cabin throughout most trips. It disapates a bit when the air vents are shut and all air (heating/ac) is turned off completely. The overwhelming smell has created a dangerous driving environment in the vehicle which can only be driven with the windows open.
Exhaust fumes entering the passenger compartment. Vehicle in motion with the air conditioner on. The vehicle was taken to a Ford dealership for repair. The dealer made a repair that was going to fix the problem but it made it worst. I took the vehicle back and they advised that they are waiting for Ford engineers to figure out the problem. Its been over two years now.
