Explorer EXT 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 78,000 miles

Bought this used Ford Explorer Feb 2017 from a local dealership (non Ford) as we liked the options and had a family member who bought a newer model. Weeks after purchasing vehicle, CBS airs a special regarding CO entering the cabins of these vehicles. Of course, you close attention especially when you have two boys under the age of 10 who ride in this vehicle and you want to protect their health. Notice slight hint of rotten egg sulfur smell when engine is under strain, going up hill, merging from on ramp and need to increase the RPM's. Noticed more so this summer with AC unit on. I am irate over Ford's inability to respond to thousands of their customers concerns and not standing behind their brand by issuing a recall of these vehicles. One could dump the vehicle off as a trade and move onto another car, but I do not want to pass this on to another family who may have kids and expose them to what is a unhealthy, odorless lethal gas. I have installed a CO detector, but wonder what small amounts of this gas could do to my family. Ford needs to step up, figure this out and take care of their customers!

Explorer

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

Purchased this car in August of 2015 because I was pregnant w/ twins and needed a larger car than what I had. When i accelerate quickly to pass someone or accelerate to go up the hill to our house, fumes enter my car. I can smell it, it's very strong. Not good when you have two young children in the back seat who regularly sleep during ride and have no way of telling me if they feel funny. Check engine light came on repeatedly in the last 6 months. Took to local garage and had purge valve sensor replaced.

Explorer XLT 3.6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles

Accelerating hard past 3500 RPM will cause exhaust fumes to get into the cabin - tested all door seals nothing, mentioned to dealer during oil change - dealer states not received any complaints from other Explorer owners regarding this issue. Test drove with CO2 gas monitor in cabin to see if this was high enough to set the alarm off - crazy truth is as soon as you pass the 3500 RPM level - a few seconds later the CO2 alarm will go off!! Indicating carbon monoxide levels at high levels. Were all getting headaches driving this truck, which we all love but man its a stinker if you push her up hills..
