Had my Explorer for a couple years, noticed a burning smell coming from rear of vehicle. smelled like burnt brakes, sure enough, brakes completely dragging. Fixed myself, basically metal on metal, very poor design

I have had this squeaking in my rear brakes for over a year- replaced Rotors, pads, brake line, calipers. I didn't replace this stuff once its been several times. It works for a little while and then the squeak comes back again. Brakes get hot and wear unevenly. It has caused a lot of money and headaches. This needs a RECALL!

2012 Ford Explorer with just under 60,000 KM wife complained about grinding and squeaky brakes. That weekend I pulled the front brakes off and found the brakes to be in really good shape about 50% wear and rotors that appear to be wearing really even. Pulled the rear brakes off the drivers side first and noticed an extreme amount to rust around the pads and caliper. Removed the 2 bolts for caliper and had a hell of a time getting them off the caliper was fully extended and when I went to compress it was seized. Metal on metal, decided to replace both rear calipers, rotors, pads, had to obviously bleed brake lines.

Upon reading on the web apparently this is a very common problem with this style of brake. I called Ford and of course it is out of warranty and they do not recognize this as being a problem lol. I understand that brakes are normal wear and tear and I'm fine with that, having to replace the entire caliper at 60,000KM is completely ridiculous. According to Ford Canada this is not a safety concern with my wife and 3 year old toddler in the car.

Thanks Ford!!!! It's hard to believe that after a 100 years of designing brakes its not right and Ford won't acknowledge it as being a problem.

I'm surprised the caliper is bad already! This car is New WTH. Really bad time because I will be going on a long drive 14hrs and really don't want to rent a car for it. Dealer said it may take a few days to repair. Good thing it's covered under my warranty. Ford has 3 year or 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty!
