I had both rear doors replaced under warranty due to bubbling paint in 2014. In 2017, I found the paint on the hood was bubbling and peeling so I went to our local Ford dealer and they charged me 278.00 to repair the defective paint on the hood.

I'm finding out from friends that also have an Explorer that the same problem is happening or has happened to them. They end up having to either pay in full for the fix or some of them have had to pay half. Since this seems to be a Ford problem - they should pay for it all. Dealerships are not that helpful with this problem!

cracked paint on hood

So frustrated to find this chipping on the front of my car. Have only had it for 4 years. Talked to someone about painting it and he says he has seen it a lot on Ford vehicles with the aluminum hood. Will stay away from Ford in the future that is for sure.

Dealer stated that vehicle was out of the original 36 month warranty. Later was told by dealer that it wouldn't have covered it anyway because the paint bubbling around the front edge of the hood could have been caused from a rock chip.

cracked paint on hood

When I noticed this defect my certified Ford vehicle was still under the mileage for the warranty but three months out of warranty. I can not believe that Ford would not considered fixing this obvious defect.

I have been faithful to Ford and brag about there product. After this experience I can no longer refer others to buy from this company. This problem is well documented and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that dissimilar metals of an aluminum hood against steel is going to have a corrosive effect and cause the paint to bubble. Ford has a technical advisory on possible fix for the defect and I'm waiting for them to step up and take responsibility and do the right thing by agreeing to fix the problem.

As mentioned by other posters went to pop the hood and noticed that all the paint was bubbling and cracking on the front of the hood right above the hood latch. Calling Ford apparently this is out of the warranty period and will not be covered by them. They acknowledge this as a problem but are not willing to do anything about it. Apart from replacing the entire hood you can have it re-painted and have the same problem come back in a few years. Once again after years of building cars and painting them they still have not got it right, and are unwilling to rectify the problem.

Thanks Ford

Bought a 2012 Explorer in Feb. 2012 and 3 years later noticed the paint was bubbling up around the edge of the hood. Spoke with several Ford employees who indicated this was not uncommon (that said it mostly happens on Mustangs) and is due to the aluminum hood not properly bonding with the paint. It continued to get worse so I escalated to Ford last summer and they opened a case. I've since done some research and it turns out this is a known factory defect for more than a decade. (also see attached link for Facebook complaint page: https://www.facebook.com/My-Ford-Paint-Peels-316386493068/ ). I was advised to take to a dealership for a quote which came back at roughly $1,100 to completely repaint the hood. I was told I would have to pay for a 1/3 out of pocket or $337.00. I've tried to escalate on multiple occasions but none of the case managers at Ford will call me back. I took it to several body shops that quoted me $300-350 for the repair which is essentially what Ford was going charge me. The dealership indicated that if I went with a standard repaint it would probably only last a year or so, then explained the complicated process of repainting it in a special way to prevent it from occurring again. I finally caved in last week as the paint is so bad it has been flaking away from the body and I could no longer have my vehicle detailed without causing more damage. There should be a class action lawsuit (the one from several years ago was recently thrown out) as this is a known factory defect.

Brought these up to a Ford dealers attention. They said it is out of the factory warranty and suggested a body shop to me. Looks like a problem with paint and aluminum hood, hope they can figure it out with all these new trucks coming out. I have three pictures available one is a small bubble, This is how they all started. Second is one cracking. Third is the paint finally just chipping off. Very frustrating. Love the vehicle other than paint issue.

I purchased this Explorer which I enjoy but the paint job on the hood is bubbling due to the clear coat. This will cause rust and when we took it to a body shop they told us to tell the manufacturer since this was not the only one they have seen this way. We know when we purchased it, the car was used and would not be perfect so we accepted the scratches and will get those taken care of but the bubbling due to the manufacturer's paint job should not have to be accepted. Please assist with this matter.

Thanks!

I WORK AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. ME/FAMILY HAVE PURCHASED 6 NEW FORDS IN LAST 12 YEARS. HAVE SEEN FORD PAY/APPROVE TO REPAIR/REPLACE ALUMINUM HOODS FOR MULTIPLE CUSTOMERS OVER MY TIME WITH THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE THIS ISSUE, AND THE DEALERSHIP TAKES PICTURES AND SUBMITTED IT TO FORD THRU THE PRE-APPROVAL PROGRAM, THAT FORD HAS, AND THEY DENIED IT. SAID IT DID NOT HAVE A HOLE IN IT. THE HOLE HAS TO BE FROM INSIDE OUT ALSO. SINCE I HAVE THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE TALKED TO THE USED CAR SALESMAN HERE AND THEY HAVE SEEN MULTIPLE HOODS, ON THIS BODY STYLE, HAVE THIS SAME ISSUE. VERY HARD FOR ME TO RECOMMEND A FORD TO ANYONE WHEN I GET TREATED THIS WAY. HOPE THIS HELPS ALL OF US WITH THESE KINDS OF PROBLEMS.

On closing the hood for the first time to top up washer fluid, the paint of the hood split about 1-2 inches on the bend portion of the hood, molded portion where you would unlock the clasp to lift the hood. Very frustrating trying to first of all get this covered by warranty. then our Ford dealer has no auto body shop so to be covered by warranty would have to drive two hours to a Ford Dealer that does body work. Not much of a warranty, would end up costing me gas, hotel as body shop work is not completed in a few hours.

Feel there is a defect in the shape, flex of the hood. You should not have to baby the hood when you close it. Ford should also certify alternate body shops to perform the work necessary for warranty claims. Poor customer service in that regards.

Very disappointed with Ford Motor. Car has been meticulously maintained and kept in a garage. Ford knew about the issue with paint bubbling on the aluminum hood of a 2012 Explorer. They agreed to pay 1/3 of the problem. They are sticking the dealer and the customer with 1/3 and 1/3. Good deal for them, considering it's a factory defect.

I just wish the United States car manufacturer 's would step up and take care of known defects. I have owned 5 Mercury Mountaineer's and never had an issue with paint.

Mullinix Ford Paint rep "DAVID" says nothing can be done about it after I drove 45 minutes one way to the dealership to get it looked at. According to online reports it appears Ford is aware of a paint bubbling problem and or chipping then rusting problems occurring in early to late 2000 model vehicles. I even bought an extended warranty and essentially was laughed at by the service writer and paint rep....

Frustrated that the paint cracking is a manufacturing defect as not a scratch, rock chip is present on the hood. The ford company is indicating that this is a flex crack on the hood. Apparently you must be extremely gentle when closing the hood. This would be my fault..why???? I have never seen a SUV that the paint on the hood cracks when it is closed. The crack is occurring on the curve at the front portion of the hood. obviously a structure defect.
