CarComplaints.com Notes: The NHTSA's complaint data shows potentially scary power steering problems with the 2011 Ford Explorer.

The steering complaints are pretty serious - owners report the power steering cuts out while driving. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the power steering problems in June 2012, which lead to a recall in 2014. However years later, many 2011 Explorer owners report this defect is still occurring.

It's too bad because the 2009 & 2010 Ford Explorer are solid, trouble-free model years.

I was in a parking lot of Ala Moana Mall in Honolulu (1/22/2024) and I went to drive my car, the steering wheel was stiff and saw a warning light "Power Steering Adjustment Assist" . I drove to 200 feet and struggling to steer the car and it was really stiff. I killed the engine and started the car again and I could steer my car but the warning light still came on. Need help how to fix this problem.

My 2011 Ford explorer suddenly lost power steering about a month ago. We turned it off and on after a few minutes and it resolved the issue for a week or so. Then while at home about to leave it lost power steering again, we tried turning it off and on and it didn't work. We haven't been able to use the vehicle. I had it towed to the dealership and now was told it's a recall but they aren't going to fix it because the mileage exceeds it and the year also is exceeding. They are asking for me to pay $3050. It absurd they can't fix a recall because it's been longer than the miles allowed or time frame. If it wasn't fixed in the vehicle it should be fixed without additional expenses.

On July 26, 2019 my power steering went out. Ford fixed it because it was a recall for free, although I had to pay $243.00 for a something Toe. This year on July 30, 2020 it went out again and they said it was passed the warranty and the cost would be $3400.00. I was told I need steering gear, front struts and sway bar links, which they claimed to have done that last year. I feel that the price is too high. I wish I could get my truck fixed by Ford because I don't feel the job was done right.

Apparently my VIN doesn't fall under the recall. There is a field service action for it, but it only covers up to a hundred and fifty thousand miles and mine went out at 154. This seems to be a really broad issue covering many factories and many batches not just the one or two that Ford has included in the recall. This needs to be an across-the-board recall, as it puts a driver in such a dangerous situation. We were turning in a busy intersection, when we suddenly lost power steering, and thankfully my husband was driving because I can't steer it now and we would have driven into a parking lot and gas pumps.

Power Steering Assist Fault, this would happen, then not, then happen, then not, then happen and happen and happen. It seemed paired with another similar service Advancetrac problem. I tried to get this fixed while under warranty two years ago but the dealer said oh this is isn't a problem, you don't need it fixed. . . now how bout we fix your CD player that won't spit out discs. . . that'll cost the full amount without invoking your warranty.

I had to drive from RMNP to Aurora with no power steering. Then straight to the shop.

This problem is so pervasive through Ford products its undeniable. Very frustrating to spend money trying to support a "reputable" company and feel like it is wasted or you're committed to spend $1700 every 3 years to keep your car on the road.... Oh and if it goes out at the wrong time you may die and take your family with you!!!!!!!!!!!! Please someone step up and face the music.

We bought a 2011 used ford explorer with just under 60,000 miles we loved it at a toyota dealership about 30 miles from where we live. After owning it around 30 -40 days, the steering completely went out several times in less than a 10 mile trip. We took it to the dealership there was a recall on this part, it was repaired at no cost.

While driving at about 40km per hour in a quiet subdivision, I noticed I couldn't turn the wheel making a right hand turn. I slowed to make turn but suddenly found I needed ALL my Strength just to Turn the wheel. I looked at my Dash and saw Power Steering Fault. I turned extremely wide...and thankfully only about a kilometer away from home. The rest of the turns were still wide and my speed was at 20km per hour the remainder of the way home.

I brought the car to the dealership on Jan 2 2017 as I was too afraid to drive it anywhere after this shock!

I'm at work today, and the dealership is opened today after the holidays. I hope to hear soon what options I have.

The power steering just quit while driving. I couldn't steer it at all. It did not cause an accident! as it easily could have. I had to tow it home. There is not a recall for the problem and my warranty does not cover the repair. I do not know just yet how much it is going to cost.

I was driving on a very busy highway with my two daughters in the car and the "Power Assist Control" failure light came on. The car becomes near to impossible to steer. It happened one other time a few months ago, and we were able to turn the car off and turn it back on and it fixed itself, but not this time. We are now with out a vehicle. No extra money to get it fixed. We are hoping that it is covered under the warranty we have, but unsure on that. Very, very, angry.

12/12/14 took car to OC Welch Ford Hardeeville SC for brakes. While it was there I asked if they could do the recall as indicated for power steering by FORD. They did and on 12/23/14 the power steering failed in Charleston WV 350 miles from destination. Called OC and their response was nothing we did. Maybe a coincidence, probably not. Got to Cleveland and the dealer replace and charge $1,471. OC did get $750 back and now I received another recall letter and it said there is reimbursement. Don't understand why the entire $1471 wasn't sent in January. I guess Ford is hoping people go away. I'll go a way but not to Ford.

On top of that the brakes done in December are now squealing and the pad is white on the edge and looks to be crumbling. What are the chances work done the same day by the same Dealer is so shoddy?

Explorer XLT

SO my Ford Explorer was part of a recall for an issue with power steering. On 2 separate occasions within a year an a half before the recall, while driving along, I lost my steering. I got the warning bells and then service power steering, service advance trac, terrain management fault all flashing on the dash. Both of these times I pulled over, shut the car off and let it sit for 15 minutes and then when I started it was all clear. In July Ford issued the recall 14S306 for a power steering problem. The fix was either software update or replace steering gear apparently whichever codes displayed for the dealer when they addressed the recall. I had my car at the dealer for routine maintenance and I asked about the recall and they said they could do it then and it was just a software update, so that was done 8/9/2014. On September 12 while driving my power steering cut out only this time it didn't come back. I had to muscle it home which was extremely dangerous. I had it towed to the Ford dealer which is McFarland Ford, Exeter NH. They told me the codes they pulled were to replace the steering gear, same codes from the recall. They needed authorization from Ford to fix it under the recall which Ford denied. Said my recall is closed since they updated the software. Recalls don't close until the problem is fixed. They do not want to pay to fix the problem. The dealer cleared the codes and my power steering came back, put in a new battery and off I went. I lost my power steering yesterday completely again. I am furious. I have a business which is completely dependent on a vehicle and this is a complete stressor. Ford is refusing to fix a problem which they created and simply they do not care about customer service. What can be done? Is there a pending class action lawsuit and if not how do we get one started. This is a dangerous situation. I had to pay to rent a car to take care of my clients. It cost 300 I can't do that every week. Right now I'm borrowing cars left and right to take care of my customers so I don't go out of business. Can someone help with advise to what rights do I have. I don't care how many miles on my car. This is a recall that Ford is trying to dance around.

First of all the power steering would go off during driving. Would have struggle hard to pull over to stop the car, turn it off, then restart to reset computer. This happened about five times. Took the SUV in. They updated the software and it didn't do this again. But, then we were out of town and drove to a restaurant. Parked, went in, ate, came back out and the explorer was totally dead. Had to be jumped off. Took the vehicle in and they couldn't find a problem. For about four or five months now the vehicle will not go in park. You have to keep clicking the button on the park stick anywhere from five to twelve times before the car will park. The P will light up at that time. Until it does, the vehicle keeps beeping at you. This also does not release the seat to the park position for you to get out. Today I got in the Explorer, cranked it up to pull out of the garage to put my dog in the back. I turned the vehicle off. When I got back in two to three minutes later the car would not even start. The battery kept ticking. All kinds of warnings were going off. The car engine wouldn't do anything. The car was dead. All of the warnings were telling me to check Brakes, check rear hatch. (It was closed). Check door Ajar., it went through all the warnings. I had to call my husband home to help me out. He jumped the vehicle off. It cranked up right away. Something is defiantly wrong with the software in the computer software. This has got to be fixed! So far, Ford has not fixed my problem.

I purchased a 2011 Ford Explorer because I have been pleased with the previous Fords we have owned. However, after having my car for one week, the power steering went out!! I was, thank goodness, riding through a parking lot. I was able to steer it to a parking place. But it was not easy!! I travel the interstate daily to go to work. I have to say had I been on the highway I most likely would have gotten into a wreck.

I took the car to my local Ford dealer where they said this was the first they had heard of this problem. They fixed it with my warranty. I had to pay the deductible of $100. I then traded my car immediately for an Edge. I sorta regret this because after thinking about it...why should I support Ford when they did nothing to help financially fix my car??? I had to transfer the cost of my warranty to my new car as well.

So....bottom line...I'm out $1,800 for a car I was too frightened to continue driving. I have to say I'm thinking of selling my Edge and never purchasing another Ford. I, too was trying to support an American company!!!
