CarComplaints.com Notes: The NHTSA's complaint data shows potentially scary power steering problems with the 2011 Ford Explorer.
The steering complaints are pretty serious - owners report the power steering cuts out while driving. The NHTSA opened an investigation into the power steering problems in June 2012, which lead to a recall in 2014. However years later, many 2011 Explorer owners report this defect is still occurring.
It's too bad because the 2009 & 2010 Ford Explorer are solid, trouble-free model years.

I purchased the 2011 Ford Explorer Limited with high hopes. The vehicle is loaded and was the most expensive vehicle I'll ever buy. I have been disappointed in the air conditioning, extremely disappointed in the mileage numbers (20 mpg vs. 25 mpg advertised), engine power is lacking and the my touch is iffy. We ordered the vehicle with a stated rebate of 1000 dollars. When the vehicle arrived 10 weeks later the rebate was only 500 dollars. Dealer stated we only got what was available at pick up date. I am convinced not to buy any more Ford products in my lifetime. I need a new truck but it certainly won't be a Ford. I have had the vehicle in the shop four times in only 6000 miles. The current problem is no heat on the passenger side and it has happened twice. Shame on you Ford!
