I bought an SUV to be able to take it and the family off road and go camping when the weather is good. Come to find out the vehicle I bought, the ford explorer is not a good vehicle for that. Turns out is has absolutely no skid plate, or any other protection on the underside of the vehicle. Of course I don't find this out until the first time I take it off road and damage the transmission oil return line and dump all the oil. Plus the radiator brackets are flimsy plastic, so it doesn't take much to break those off, so with no protection one of them fell off as well. So far in 3 years of ownership I have had to replace the radiator twice, and fix numerous oil lines due to no skid plates. Not all from off roading either. Bits of rubber from shredded truck tires on the road, there goes an oil line since they are just hanging there with nothing guarding them. How can you design a "SUV" call it an "off road vehicle" but put no skid plates on it. I might as well have bought a toyota yaris, would have been better designed and not have had this problem.
