CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.
While driving the wheels would emit a distinct whirling sound and grinding/vibrating sensation. Over the course of two years both rear bearings were replaced twice and the front once with the exception of the front passenger one which failed twice.
This is my second Explorer and although the rest of the car is good, my second one has me never wanting to buy another one ever again... why... because since 2012 I have had to replace wheel bearings and hubs every year in addition to having major problems with the advance trac. I am all for having to repair my car to keep it in shape but this is ridiculous when I have to fix the same things every year and it is very costly.
Additionally I must add that for some reason my rear door/window also has a crack in the body of the car which is from opening the window portion of the back door, not the door itself. I see many others that seem similar to mine in year with the exact same crack. Looks like there needs to be some recalls made and FORD NEEDS TO STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT MAKING SOME IMPROVEMENTS... otherwise why would I ever want to buy another Ford again???
