CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

My truck was totaled because the brakes went after a car accident that shouldn't have been that bad. Because of the location of the brakes, my truck had to be totaled instead of fixed. If it had been more in the center instead of the drivers side it may have been okay. All brakes went because of the accident and there was no way to stop the truck besides putting it in park to get it to stop. IF YOU BUY THIS TRUCK, DON'T HAVE AN ACCIDENT WHERE THE DRIVER'S SIDE IS THE SIDE HIT, OR YOU WILL NO LONGER HAVE THE TRUCK!
