CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

I own a 2005 Explorer and like the many issues above me, I just hit 44,000 miles, and my abs light came on for good. This seems to be more common than I had first suspected. What is the resolution? The dealer wants to diagnose it, when I told them the problem. Is this a common practice? From what the dealer told me, there are 4 ABS sensors; 1 for each of the tires. Then there is a separate one for the main brain box. When the problem first came up, my advtrac sensor, 4X4 sensor, ABS sensor and 1 other sensor was faulting. I then could shut the car off and on a could of times and the problem would stop. After about a week of this, it stopped resetting itself and it is now on. When my 4X4 sensor flashes on and off the car acts as if I manually turned on the 4X4 high and rides rough for a few seconds and then stops. Can you see my frustration?
I'm sure this will be my last Ford I buy. I bought 3 fords to my 1 hyundai, and the Hyundai is a 1996 with 164,000 miles on it. Only had to replace a few standard items, like brakes, tune ups, alternator adn the car is still ticking like a champ.
