CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.
from the day I bought the car I noticed a high pitched whine from the dash. I have mentioned this EVERY SINGLE TIME I take it in for all the other annoying issues I have had to deal with and since the service men cant hear it they wont fix it. I have had other mechanics tell me its a short in the radio itself which is the FACTORY RADIO but since the ford service enter guys cant hear what i hear they have refused over and over to fix it. now my warranty is expired. GOOD JOB FORD!!!!!!!
