CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2004 Ford Explorer one of our worst vehicles on record. "Avoid like the plague" is putting it lightly.

The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Another common problem for the 2002-2005 Explorer is wheel bearing failure at around 90k miles, with a typical repair bill of $500 to $1000 depending on how many wheel bearings failed.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

I had to have the heater blend door replaced on my Ford Explorer. The cost was over $1000. The entire dashboard had to be removed. I know that a tsb was issued by Ford on this problem, many owners have had the same problem as I did. This is an engineering/manufacturing defect that is not only costly to repair, but in my opinion can cause the windshield to fog up while driving because you can not control the heater function. This can lead to a poor or non visibility situation and could cause an accident. Please look into this problem to avoid any possible accidents. I have read numerous reports from other owners online regarding this problem.please contact Ford about this potentially hazardous problem and issue a recall notice. The blend door is not strong enough to withstand the blowers air pressure. Thank you for your help in this matter.

The blend door behind the glove compartment won't close. This prevents proper defrosting, heating and cooling regardless of the weather. In the winter freezing air blows through, chilling all passengers. In the summer, all the heat from the roads comes through. Our Ford dealer says they can fix it for over $1000!! there are too many of these defects on the road and Ford knew of the defect at least 2 years before my SUV was even made.
