Timing Chain Tensioner Problems
2002 Ford Explorer (Page 1 of 2)
This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Ford dealer.
CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002 Ford Explorer is hands-down our worst vehicle on record. "Avoid like the plague" is putting it lightly.
The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.
Another common problem for the 2002-2003 Explorer is wheel bearing failure at around 90k miles, with a typical repair bill of $500 to $1000 depending on how many wheel bearings failed.
Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

Started the Explorer and it wouldn't shift out of park. Let it warm up and the ticking/rattling sound started worse than I've ever heard from it. It has always had a rattling sound coming from the timing chain/fan belt area. We always dealt with it because we had a Ford dealership fix the timing chain and they told us that it would always rattle and make some sound. They couldn't find anything else wrong with it at the time this was several years ago and was told that some Fords are just loud. Took it to the repair shop and again it needs another timing chain replacement along with other repairs. They quoted me about $3500 if I was lucky since it was going to be a 22 hour job plus costs of parts, this is not taking into account the other things I need repaired. I could buy a new engine since I also need a new transmission and rear differential work but I no longer love my Ford and who has that kind of money to throw at a bottomless pit. I could replace the engine, timing chain and sell it or trade it
I am now rendered with a useless vehicle and all we are getting is snow, snow and more snow. Thanks Ford for literally leaving me in the cold.
