While switching from park to drive it felt as if the transmission selector was stuck, after applying a little more force to the selector I heard a snap. After the snap the transmission would remain in reverse, no mattter what drive selection I made. I had it towed to a local mechanic who advised the transmission had failed and would cost $1800 to remove rebuild and re-install. I only had 80000 miles on the transmission - never abused. I agree with all others who have complained about their explorer transmission failures - Ford should be picking up the tab - it is definitely a terrible design.
