This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.

Purchased vehicle from private seller. I asked the seller why the O/D light off was flashing on the dash. He said he had no experience with engines and he didn't know what it was for. The next day, I was checking all fluids and levels. Anyway, I look in the transmission filling area and noticed the level was waaayyy past full (above crossbar area); I see that there is only milky-pink like substance in it. From all the research I have done already, I think the pink substance is a mixture of transmission fluid and anti-freeze. I have not had a chance (or the money) to know exactly what is wrong with it, but I do know that anti-freeze is not supposed to be in the transmission fluid area(s). My guess is that the problem was caused by an internal failure in the radiator cooling line. I believe that Ford should recall these transmissions because they know it is a major problem. Please, is there anyone that has already started a class-action lawsuit on Ford because of this matter? knowing that they are selling (or sold) a defective product to hundreds of thousands of customers.this has to be a manufacturer issue! the consumer should not be responsible for this issue.
Clear coat is pealing on hood and over back hatch, transmission problems and headlight problems the headlight will not work on dim I have taken it to the shop and they can not find anything wrong with it. The sensor keeps going out on the transmission.
Environmental control system, 1995 Ford Explorer -air flow blend door failure caused windshield to completely fog obscuring view forcing emergency pull over and stop on interstate. Other drivers were forced to take evasive actions to avoid collision.
Tensioner belt was going into it's frame holder. While opening the hood and truck running serpentine belt might have break have been cut apart and injuring the person looking for the problem. 3-other Explorer had the same problem while I was with the mechanic.

Since 1997, vehicle has had problems with the check engine light. Response from Ford was that due to the large number of sensors that activate the light, it would be impossible to tell what was setting it off. Then told Ford to run PCM diagnostic test to obtain codes, didn;T know what I was talking about. Finally got them to do it, and it came up with faulty O2 sensor. Replaced sensor, and problem persisted. Went back, ran test, came back with same results. Ford has been no help, contacted Ford, said not safety related, therefore not their problem. Will never buy a Ford again.
As I drive the Explorer on the highway or at any speeds for longer periods of time(200+ miles), engine check light comes on, and the horsepower is affected. Gas mileage decreases to about 8 mpg, and this lasts for as long as the vehicle is driven. I have had the transmission replaced, and I have changed the spark plugs, the spark plug wires, the mass air-flow sensor, the fuel filters and the alternator. The problem is still occurring though. I would like to get the problem fixed so as to feel safe in this vehicle.
