Expedition XLT 3.5L V6 Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 62,000 miles

We had Ford perform a diagnosis of a rattling sounds that was occurring on cold start. It would go away after 5-10 seconds. The result was a replacement of cam phasers and timing belts—quoted at $6500. We were told that over time it would worsen and cause engine failure.

We ended up going to a different shop that did it for a bit less, but this still came out to just under $5500 for repairs and parts (16 hours labor and about $3000 in parts). Ford was covering repairs for the issue until January 2023, but at the time of repair (August 2024), nothing was covered.

Seems like the 3.5L EcoBoost engine must be garbage as it is absolutely ludicrous to have to pay out this kind of money for engine work at 62000 miles. Guess there is a reason Ford only offers a 5 year, 60000 warranty when others are offering 10 year, 100000 mile coverage. Some people have reported experiencing this problem multiple times. Stay far, far away!!

Expedition Stealth

  • Automatic transmission

The truck sounds like a diesel when it starts for the first 2-3 seconds then runs fine. Ford has known of the problem with this engine from 2017 onward, but sent us NO RECALL (until after I took my truck in and barely snuck in still covered by the warranty). Then we were told by our service tech that the parts in the engine could be replaced, but that Ford does not have the correct updated software to be able to re-program it and we would need to check back monthly with them to see when the new software is available. He also told us he would "try" to keep our service ticket open as long as possible so it would still get covered under warranty. (EVEN THOUGH THE PROBLEM IS KNOWN ABOUT BY FORD AND THEY DON'T HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE AVAILABLE TO FIX IT CURRENTLY!!)

We were then told that the dealer is too short staffed to contact us when it is available... should probably find a new name for the "Service Department".
