The contact owns a 2017 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the driver's side front tire became flat. The contact pulled to the side of the road to replace the driver's side front tire; however, she was unable to remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. AAA arrived on the scene but was also unable to remove the lug nuts. AAA informed the contact that the aluminum caps on the lug nuts prevented the lug wrench from removing the lug nuts. The vehicle was towed to a tire repair specialist where twenty-four lug nuts were replaced. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was a wear and tear issue. The manufacturer advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I purchased my Ford Expedition new in January 2018 and have driven it 40,000 miles. When I took it to Wyatt Johnson Ford yesterday for a routine oil change and tire rotation, I was told that it has "Swollen lug nuts." I have Extended Plus Elite New warranty, Ultimate Titanium Plus warranty, and Perma Plate Appearance Protection warranty; but was told that the warranties would not cover replacement of the swollen lug nuts. Apparently this is a poor design and Ford should redesign the lug nuts and issue a recall.

When I recently got tires rotated my vendor (not the car manufacturer) informed me there are known problems with lug nuts on Ford Expeditions; that apparently something about two-layer metal causing swelling and difficulty for tire repair shops to effectively remove them which causes (to a degree) stripping of them. Tire shop employee informed me and also showed me the result after they rotated and you can tell there is an issue.
