Expedition XLT 5.4L V8

There was a subtle ticking sound coming from the engine that become more and more pronounced over the course of a few days. One day, while diagnosing the issue, I had the engine idling while listening to various parts of the engine... While idling, there was a sudden catastrophic engine failure; the sound of metal parts hitting/grinding and the engine turned off. I knew that it was bad and did not bother trying to restart the engine. I had the Expedition towed to local mechanic nearby and after a few days they discovered that a roller follower (rocker roller) on cylinder two had failed and broke into the engine. This resulted in needing a new engine.

This is a common failure; most common on cylinder two.

Expedition XLT 5.4L 3v V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 95,125 miles

The 5.4 L Triton motor is a piece of crap. After 95k miles a tapping noise has developed from the engine with a major loss in power. The noise is getting louder and continues to tap even faster when you accelerate. I am being told it is a common issue and is either the cam phasers or a bad rod bearing. Either way, a very costly repair to a very well kept and serviced automobile.

You should not have this type of problem with a $50k plus automobile only after 95k miles.
