This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
: the contact stated while driving 20 mph on a dry road during normal braking conditions, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor which resulting in an extended stopping distance. This was accompanied by a groaning noise in the brakes. The vehicle stopped after driving up over a roadside curb. The vehicle was not immediately taken in for service. Updated 9/13/2006 - the vehicle was taken to a Ford dealer who determined that the driver's side front hub assembly was bad. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility for repair.
ABS light comes on at random times. Brake failure at slow to moderate speeds like in antilock mode or like stopping on gravel. Pedal stiff and cannot pump brakes while feeling and sounding jerky. Have replaced wheel speed sensor and ABS solenoid sensor. Will finally grab and stop after approx. 20 feet of pumping.
While driving attempted to slow down to make a turn, and found out that vehicle did not have any brakes. Took automobile to repair shop, and found out that ABS unit was not preforming. Consumer states there was never any kind of warning prior or after incident.

This vehicle has had "no brakes" on numerous occasions. When we took it in to our local Ford dealership for the first time on 10-7-98, we were told because they cannot duplicate the problem, we have no problem. When it was taken in on 1-27-99 to our local Ford dealership they called the manufacture this time to find out if any other Expedition might of had this same sort of problem and was advised "no". they decided because it had the same brake system as another Ford vehicle to change the front sensors. When I went to pick the vehicle up from them, I was told by the service manager that I should drive with the anticipation that the brakes could go out at any given time. They were not sure that this fixed the problem. Well low and behold the brakes went out again, this time a solo accident with this vehicle with "no brakes". we were very lucky no other vehicles were involved as someone would definitely have gotten killed. This vehicle definitely poses a high safety risk to the roads and highways it is driven on.
From a parking space at a strip mall I backed into a 3' concrete pole, when I applied my foot to the brake and put the vehicle in drive, the vehicle sped off as if I had floored the accelerator. No amount of pumping the brakes did any good. I hit two other cars, took out a brick column and didn't stop until I hit a second brick column. Witnesses say that they did see brake lights on my vehicle.
From date of purchase there were problems with ABS. ABS brake system replaced 4 times. When driving 30 mph or less and applying brakes, lost all braking ability.
Vehicle has no brakes at low speeds during failure. It can be intermittent. The system thinks the wheels are locked and will not allow brakes to apply. I used to work for Ford. This is known within the company, but is kept very quiet. Dealers must call and speak to someone to get help. The problem is not documented with tsb's or other service information systems.
Would be driving vehicle & applying brakes (ABS) & pedal would pulsate. Vehicle would fail to stop. Problem is intermittent. ABS light kept coming on and staying. Would only go off when vehicle is not on. Took to dealership & was informed tsb on vehicle & it was out of warranty, by 5 weeks with only 4163 miles. The vehicle is used to pull boat, and has extremely poor fuel mileage.this vehicle had two brake failures due to bad sensors. The manufacturer installed defective sinsors which are safety hazard but refuses admit.
Turning rt after a stop, I began to accelerate. Instantly the vehicle began to lisp to the left and travel across the center lane. Applying the brakes I could not turn back into the rt lane. The left drivers mirrow was ripped off as it clipped a neighbors lawn pole. Standing I still could not turn the vehicle. It stopped. Not able to exit the drivers door, I did the passengers. Inspecting, the left front wheel was gone. Towed to beaudrt Ford the vehicle had twice the damage as at the scene. ( pictures were taken at both places). Ask if there were any recalls, I was told no, 4 times. This is untrue. I have been forced to allow beaudry to fix my vehicle as they tell me they cannot get any Ford engineers to inspect the car. This SUV fell apart. 152,000 of the same year 4X4S were recalled.
Was driving vehicle & applied brakes to slowdown. Brakes fail to catch & hit a moped. Was plenty of distance for stopping. Was third set of brakes on vehicle. Windshield wipers are not working like they should. Problem is intermitten. Took vehicle to dealer & mechanic indicated the ABS brakes are okay. Wipers can be repaired.
Axle-front- lubricant leaking from front axle tube vent hose--issue oil is forced out the vent tube and sprayed oil all over right/front tire and disc brake and rotor. I paid to repaired it. Ford had no concern about the safety problem. Ford knows about the problem. There is a tsb (97-10-10). Oil on the brake pads rotor and tire would cause a stopping problem. Also oil based lubricants cause rubber parts (seals) to swell up on anti-lock brake system. Ford would not pay to repair the factory built- in defect and would not acknowledge any safety problem. A new design axle tube is needed to correct the origional design flaw. Oil coated tires and brakes do not stop well, and should be looked into before someone gets into an auto wreck.
Brakes have failed repeatedly but intermittently since 3/97, multiple dealers unable to locate problem. Parts replaced, but brakes continue to fail. Brakes go hard, takes a long time to stop, vehicle shudders during braking.
