First "engine light" came on. Within a week a ticking sound started like a piston bad. Before we could get it to a shop, it started a LOUD clanking sound on start up, but pressure would drop upon turning on heater. Took it to one shop and they thought it was loose timing belt, so of course, part of top engine removed. They tell me not the problem and they will have to drop oil pan and gaskets. It was then that I stopped the work believing I was being taken for a ride with this mechanic.
Took to 2nd mechanic, which it took 2 days to figure out it is a "broken flywheel" and they have to drop transmission. I am still without a car, it has been five days and is now up to date cost $1,052 to find the problem. I don't know if I am being taken for a ride here as well, but my son-ion-law swears by this mechanic and has taken over the care of my car. This car is only worth $600 by "Kelly Blue Book". It's not worth it! Also told this is a common problem with 1998 Ford Escort SE. WHAT THE HELL!
