Ford is aware of this problem. The service center was not surprised at all when I told them what was wrong with the car. Had my daughter been driving at the time it happened she could have had a serious collision. I understand from the service center that the other major problem with the 2005 Escape Hybrid is the braking module failing. Let's hope it doesn't happen when I'm driving on the freeway!! Come on Ford pay for these manufacturing defects.

Power steering module failure. Got a quote of $700 plus labor to get it fixed.

Update from Nov 24, 2014: Some additional information: had to replace the AC compressor assembly in Sept. 2013. Also just got a letter dated October 2014 from Ford identifying a recall for the a "Motor Electronics Coolant Pump" that "may fail and cause the electronics cooling system to overheat". Now I'm starting to wonder if these problems are all related. The car does have a fair amount of miles on it now so I expect some wear and tear but it seems strange that the compressor and now the Power Steering Module Controller (PMSC) have failed within the past 12 months.

As soon as it happened I took it to the dealer I bought it from. They told me there was no reason they could find that it happened. Approx. every 3000 miles I took it in for "the works". I reported to them it was still happening, sometimes multiple times in a day. They said there was no reason for it. This has gone on for 8 years. I now have no power steering at all.
