A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I am writing to bring to your attention a critical safety issue I recently encountered with my 2015 Ford Escape. I am deeply concerned about the lack of response and accountability from Ford regarding this matter, and I kindly request your assistance in addressing this potentially life-threatening problem.

During a recent incident, my vehicle's power steering suddenly failed, rendering the car extremely difficult to maneuver. The lack of power steering made it nearly impossible for me to maintain a straight line, let alone perform any evasive maneuvers to avoid potential hazards on the road. Fortunately, this incident occurred in a drive-thru, and my children were not present in the vehicle at the time. I dread to think of the consequences if this failure had happened while driving at higher speeds or in a more critical situation.

Upon taking my car to the Ford dealership for inspection and repair, I was shocked to learn that the power steering issue is not covered under my warranty. The dealership informed me that because my vehicle has exceeded 60,000 miles and is now over four years old, it falls outside the warranty coverage. I find it deeply troubling that Ford refuses to acknowledge the obvious flaw in the design of the car's power steering system, especially when comparable Ford models such as the 2011-2013 Fusion have been recalled for the exact same issue. As a loyal Ford customer, I implore you to thoroughly investigate and address this widespread problem, not only for my own sake but also for the safety and well-being of countless other Ford owners who may be facing similar risks. This dangerous design flaw poses a significant threat to drivers and their passengers, and it is utterly irresponsible for Ford to shirk responsibility and shift the financial burden onto the customers.

Moreover, I have encountered conflicting information regarding the warranty coverage criteria for this issue. Initially, I was told that the coverage was determined based on the miles I drive rather than the total mileage on the car. Additionally, I was informed that the vehicle had to be five years old, not four years, for the warranty to expire. The inconsistency in these statements further fuels my concerns and strengthens my belief that my vehicle may be considered a lemon, as it experienced this critical failure shortly after purchase in 2019. Considering the financial burden imposed on me, I am actively seeking options for vehicle repair assistance. I am exploring the possibility of obtaining partial or full payment for the necessary power steering rack replacement. Any support or guidance you can provide in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

I sincerely hope that you take this matter seriously and understand the urgency of addressing this dangerous design flaw. As a devoted customer, I trust that Ford will uphold its commitment to customer safety and take the necessary steps to rectify this issue promptly and responsibly.

Power steering stops working with no warning. From what I read Ford knows about the problem but has never issued a recall. I have read it's a $2500.00 fix but I have not heard what the fix actually is?

So, my steering assist has failed and gone out 3 times now. Ford REFUSES to talk to me. That includes two dealerships that won't even give me an estimate to fix it! Mike Maroone Ford and Interstate Ford in or near Longmont, CO. I've contacted NHTSA 3 times who seem unconcerned and are dragging their feet even though this could eventually kill someone and both the 2013 and 2014 Escapes (I believe) have been recalled for the same problem and the 2015 has the exact same power steering control module.

I finally found a mechanic who is going to fix it but it is going to cost me upwards of $3,000! For something there should be a recall on! It's outrageous and there should be a class action suit. I myself plan on taking Ford to small claims court over this. As matter of fact, this site and others describing multiple cases of this are going to be part of my evidence. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD or trust Consumer Reports reviews of vehicles again, for that matter.

I was lucky! There was NO WARNING from one day to the next! I had driven my granddaughter to her riding lesson the day before (freeway driving in homeward bound traffic) with no problems. This day I jumped in my car for a quick trip to the grocery store, backed out of my driveway but then had to really work hard to turn into my lane of traffic. Of course one of my neighbors came around the curve as I was stuck pointing into her lane . Thank heavens this didn't happen when I was trying to maneuver in bumper to bumper traffic! Of course, THIS IS WHEN THE WARNING MESSAGE CAME UP. Not much help!

I pulled out my manual which says "when an electrical error is detected a message will be displayed." It goes on to advise me to stop my vehicle in a safe place and turn off the engine for at least 10 seconds, then restart to see if I get another message and if I do I should take my vehicle to the dealer. It goes on to assure me I can still steer manually although it takes more effort. (Like A LOT more effort)!

I feel this is pretty cavalier of Ford. In my mind a warning message is to give you a chance to take care of the problem BEFORE you find yourself in trouble. AND trying to muscle my car thru freeway traffic sounds like a recipe for disaster. The expense of the fix sucks! However, If I knew I wouldn't find myself in the same position with steering problems coming at the worst possible time with no warning it wouldn't bother me as much. I'm hoping that since I'm not commuting to a job the fix will last. Meantime I'm researching other car manufacturers to see if anyone has a better design cause this one sucks.

I'll take the fewer miles/gal to have a system that will give me a way to avoid this happening in a worse spot. Also, I didn't want to try driving to my mechanic who is close by but would require me to drive on roads where there might not be a spot for me to pull off if needed. I have AAA so I was able to cover the towing thru them and since I was at home I wasn't sitting beside the freeway in the heat waiting for the tow truck which ended up taking several hours. Again I WAS LUCKY! Lastly, when my husband and I did our research before purchasing this car, NO WHERE did we find any information of this happening. I purchased my car used in 2017.

Escape Titanium

I was on my way home from work and was pulling out of the parking lot, when all of a sudden my car started to beeping telling me there is an issue and I looked at my dashboard (2015 Ford Escape Titanium) and it said "steering assist failure" see dealer. Once I pulled out I had NO control over the power steering. Luckily, there was no incoming traffic or I would have caused an accident. I pulled over and restarted the car and that seemed to correct it.

The next morning I was planning on taking the car to the dealer and as I pulled out of my driveway again the car beeped and gave me the same alert - and I had NO control over the steering and again was thankful no traffic was coming. I took it to the dealer and after they examined the car they told me that the "Power Steering Control Module" was going to need to be replaced. They were very helpful at the dealer but yet said this was not a recall issue.

Lucky I had bought the extended warranty so it is covered or I would have had to dish out $4000. Not happy about that because how many issues does a car need to have to enforce a recall? It's scary because what if I was out on the highway turning? I am glad my dealer took care of it right away but am pretty disappointed that again this is not a recall.

I am so upset. I was on my way to work and went to put my car (2015 Ford Escape) in reverse when a message came up on the screen about my steering wheel (steering assist fault), call your dealer. My steering wheel had just locked up. What happened if I would have started to drive to work and this happened on the freeway?? But the biggest smack in the face was that there is no recall for this problem...despite the fact that I have seen numerous complaints about the same problem. Thank God no one has been killed...YET. I haven't heard a solution to this problem. I'm really scared to drive my beautiful new (to me) car. I only have 51,000 miles. This shouldn't be happening.

Electronic power steering failure (twice) after driving three hours stopped for gas, started vehicle and info center said power steering failure have vehicle serviced. Steering was very difficult. Parked vehicle for 4 hours and when restarted problem fixed itself. Took to dealer next day and they couldn't duplicate problem and returned it to me unrepaired. This has happened twice, a year apart, under the same circumstances with the same results, nothing.

Started the car up in the grocery store parking lot, got an error message, steering assist needs service. In attempting to get home it was like driving a Sherman tank! Now I have to wait while they get the parts necessary to fix it. I'm going to be without a vehicle for at least 5 days which is totally unacceptable when I have a car with 18,000 km on it. I guess I expected to much in thinking a new Ford would be reliable.

Pulling out of a parking space the steering just quit. Steering wheel moved but tires did not turn. This is my 3rd Ford. Extremely happy with my current Ranger as well as my last Ranger. Flabbergasted by this problem on a relatively new Escape.

Update from Sep 8, 2015: The car was viewed at the dealership (Brandon Ford) and it was discovered that they would have to replace the entire steering column. Holiday weekend so we still await the repair.
