My Escape started stalling after I had driven it at highway speeds for long enough to get the engine good and warm. At first, it would stall only after I turned the engine off and restarted it, such as making a stop on my way home from work. It would start back up in Park, but when I put it in Drive, it would drive a few yards, then the engine would die and the fuel light would come on (even though there was plenty of gas in the tank). Stopping the car, putting it in Park, and restarting the engine usually fixed it. Occasionally, it would die after restarting and while driving down a street, and if I floored the gas pedal, it would shudder a little and keep going. After a few months, the engine started dying if it had to sit and idle, such as at a railroad crossing or in a traffic jam. Repeated restarts did nothing; the engine would run for a few minutes, then die. I finally took it into the dealer, and after a couple of days of diagnostics, they figured out that it was the Active Grille Shutter system. The shutters were closing off and not allowing enough airflow into the engine. Fortunately, the $500 pert is covered under my extended warranty!
Update from Apr 4, 2019: Unfortunately, the Active Grille Shutter did not fix the stalling, and I was right back at the dealer within a week. I gave them detailed information I printed off the internet regarding the problem and the fixes that other users had tried. Fortunately, they were able to replicate the stalling problem, and they determined it was the Fuel Pressure Sensor. After this was replaced, the car has not stalled once!
