CarComplaints.com Notes: The top problem trend for the 2014 Escape is transmission failure at around 70k miles.
This is relatively low mileage for an expensive transmission failure ($4,500 average to fix), but unless the trend becomes more established, we are only awarding the 2014 Escape our "Beware of the Clunker" badge for now.
Ford needs to fix this problem - I have seen several people have this same issue. I was almost in a wreck because my coolant light comes on and starts shaking, but the coolant is full. It’s a sensor or something - my vehicle shuts down - this is dangerous!
Engine keeps overheating but there's no coolant leak. Sometimes engine goes too hot and then goes back to normal like it’s an electrical problem. This happened after I got my transmission replaced.
Sad to say, I recently got the car from CARMAX and there was no mention of the "disappearing coolant" that apparently leaks into the engine block. The car is now at a Ford Dealer where I was greeted with a say no more attitude. Also here in CA we are now in a new Covid lockdown and I don't know what to do. Ford needs to stand behind their vehicles, seems they have known for a long time about this issue. I am at a loss, at 62 and out of work I find myself holding the bag for a problem well known to Ford!
This car has a recall on the coolant system, it was in the shop for the coolant system before the recall, during the recall, twice after that, and I need to take it back again because the coolant level is still dropping. I constantly have to drive with coolant in the back of my car to ensure that I can make it anywhere safely. It will alert me if the coolant level is low, and the overheating light has come on twice because the coolant leaks out so fast. I literally put coolant in and watched it leak out as fast I was putting it in, it was repaired and now two weeks later I will be taking it back for it's fifth visit to the mechanic for the coolant system.
Check Engine Light along with overheating. Did not drive car further. Reservoir for coolant cracked on the side and underside toward the engine, coolant leaked all over. Reservoir is plastic but warps from the hot engine, poor materials. Replaced. No known damage to the cylinder.

Ford has many and I do mean many complaints about the cooling system on Escapes. They will not help you with it either. They don't care if you are stuck along side the road somewhere or if it will cause an accident. It is very unsafe. Maybe they have to do something when a few people get killed. Don't buy a Ford Escape, they are garbage. The worst!!!
The Engine Overheating light comes on just two miles down the road. The answer is, Ford has issues with the engine coolant levels going down and they installed a sensor that tells the driver when this happens. That's good and bad. It's nice to know when coolant levels are low, so you can add coolant. It's bad because it is a chronic issue. Ford has not fixed why coolant levels go low. So, the owner/driver has to drive around with a bottle of coolant in the back of the car ready to add some. I just checked the coolant and topped it off one month ago and already it Engine Overheating light is going off and the coolant level is low. It's a pain in the ass and also potentially dangerous. Car fires and cracked engine heads have been reported, yet the NHTSA has not instituted a recall. Ford installed sensors that tell you when the coolant level is low and that is their answer to this issue. Unacceptable and dangerous!
