CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Ford Escape has been in the news quite a bit and for all the wrong reasons. Within a few months of its release the SUV was recalled three times, twice because of engine fires.
In July 2012, due to a fuel line that could split and leak, Ford told owners to park their cars because even driving to the dealership for repairs was deemed too dangerous. Instead, in a somewhat unprecedented move, Ford sent tow trucks to pick up the affected vehicles and handed out rental cars while the owners waited for repairs.
A few months later the Escape was recalled again because antifreeze could leak out onto the engine due to a freeze plug becoming dislodged. As the coolant hit the hot engine there was, once again, a threat for fire.
The 2013 is the first model year of the Escape's 3rd generation and proves once again that you want to avoid the first model year when at all possible.
Bought vehicle new in 2013, and when in for service, I asked to have transmission serviced and told it is a sealed unit and didn’t need servicing till 100,000 miles. I have 97,000 miles and now I'm told I need a new transmission at a price of $6300.00 to $6500.00. I think Ford should be responsible for telling me when I asked (several times) - it’s a sealed unit and no service till 100,000 miles. I will not buy another Ford product.
The 2013 Ford Escape with the Titanium Package and eco-boost turbo 4 cylinder engine, shudders very badly when going between 40 and 55 mph and you let off the gas to slow down then step on the gas again. Ford dealer said it is a torque converter problem and the transmission and torque converter needs to be re-built at a cost of over $5,000. The car has 93,000 miles and so the power-train warranty is only good for 60,000 miles according to the dealer.
After researching this on-line it appears this is a widespread problem with the Escape and Ford is not doing much about it. I am taking it to my trusted mechanic who is going to take a look at it and advise me of his opinion. He said he has heard there is an Additive you can use that is supposed to help with this problem and it only costs $9. I will update this once I find out more info.
I have always bought Toyotas until this car but decided to "buy American" and liked the fact that Ford did not take any government handouts when the recession hit. However this is the last time I will ever own a Ford!
