CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Ford Escape has been in the news quite a bit and for all the wrong reasons. Within a few months of its release the SUV was recalled three times, twice because of engine fires.
In July 2012, due to a fuel line that could split and leak, Ford told owners to park their cars because even driving to the dealership for repairs was deemed too dangerous. Instead, in a somewhat unprecedented move, Ford sent tow trucks to pick up the affected vehicles and handed out rental cars while the owners waited for repairs.
A few months later the Escape was recalled again because antifreeze could leak out onto the engine due to a freeze plug becoming dislodged. As the coolant hit the hot engine there was, once again, a threat for fire.
The 2013 is the first model year of the Escape's 3rd generation and proves once again that you want to avoid the first model year when at all possible.
This is the second time this has happened...first time the engine was replaced with a rebuild.. at about 50k.. now the second engine having about 43k is doing the same thing....so its apparent these engines are junk..of course the second one is not under warranty The car has a host of other issues... that I will add individually
I purchased this used car 2 months ago and it's been a nightmare. First 100 miles and the left axle broke. Yesterday my husband was driving out of the parking lot and it just stopped. Engine turned off!!
We got home and I left to go to the pet store and it happened when i was in reverse leaving the driveway. Just stopped working!!
I called the Ford company and reported it and was told I am not under the recall for the harness and to take it into my local dealership to have it looked at. When I did this for the axle repair I had items stolen out of my car.
When I pay this POS off, I'm going back to buying only Honda's. This car is horrible and I will never buy a Ford again.
Traveling today on a two lane country road with a 55 mph limit. Came up on a vehicle doing 45 mph. When oncoming traffic clear I floored the car to pass. Car downshifted and turbo kicked in and then loss of all power. No lights come on engine does not stall just goes back to normal rpm. Scared the crap out of me. Had to hit my brakes and merge back in behind the slow car. Thankfully the pickup behind me did not try to pass with me. Seem to me the engine shuts down when it has reached its shift point (max rpm) while still floored and is shifting to the next gear. Probable 3rd to fourth. Going to go out on expressway tomorrow and try to duplicate incident and then call Ford dealer. Car just went out of warranty last month. Figures.
Any time when you are driving down the highway all codes go off telling the engine is going to over heart, hillside assist, engine light. It is telling you to get stopped at the same time the engine mph and rpm's go to zero and you cannot accellerate. Making this car unsafe and unreliable car. After finding 60 engine codes and keeping the car for 12 days the first time 14 days the second time (it has been in the shop 7 times. They call and tell us to pick up the car their throwing in the towel they cannot find the problem so we have to pick it up and they tell us if the car breaks or something else happens bring it back. Ford does not care we feel cheated, we only bought Ford attemting to be patriotic, and buy Americian. So much for that. Now we own an unsafe car and no one to help.
