CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Ford Escape has been in the news quite a bit and for all the wrong reasons. Within a few months of its release the SUV was recalled three times, twice because of engine fires.

In July 2012, due to a fuel line that could split and leak, Ford told owners to park their cars because even driving to the dealership for repairs was deemed too dangerous. Instead, in a somewhat unprecedented move, Ford sent tow trucks to pick up the affected vehicles and handed out rental cars while the owners waited for repairs.

A few months later the Escape was recalled again because antifreeze could leak out onto the engine due to a freeze plug becoming dislodged. As the coolant hit the hot engine there was, once again, a threat for fire.

The 2013 is the first model year of the Escape's 3rd generation and proves once again that you want to avoid the first model year when at all possible.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the wiring was installed incorrectly when the vehicle was manufactured. The contact was concerned that the failure could cause a fire or the vehicle to break down. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brain box failed. Homer skelton Ford of millington (9030 us-54, millington, tn) was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle lost power. In addition, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The service engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the wires in the engine needed to be re-spliced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign numbers: 15V813000 (electrical system) and 14V495000 (electrical system), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 63,000. Updated 08/05/16* consumer stated the safety issue was the engine sputtering and failing to accelerate. This could be a problem if it happened when pulling into traffic or crossing an intersections. Our experience and the repairs (see attached) are identical to the described on other 2013 Ford Escape recalls leading the consumer to believe those recalls did not include all problem vehicles. The contact owns a 2013 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle could be restarted. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the wiring splice kit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

2013 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to "engine fault- service now" warning appeared on the dash when starting vehicle. Consumer states vehicle stalled and lost all power. The consumer stated the first engine fault light happened in October 2013. He turned the engine off and re-started it again, and the light didn't come back on. The second fault occurrence as he was leaving the house in mid-February. The vehicle moved very sluggishly and didn't appear to be getting any power. On March 15, 2014, the vehicle stalled and lost all power. The only message that displayed said to put the vehicle in park. Fortunately, the vehicle started again. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but a diagnostic test didn't reveal any problems. The dealer kept the vehicle for 2 weeks, with no success in finding a problem. The next morning, the engine fault service no error message appeared on the dash. When his wife attempted to drive away, the vehicle accelerated sharply and took off down the road at a high rate of speed, leaving her with no control of the acceleration or speed of the vehicle. She applied the brakes, and the vehicle stopped. The consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer, and on the way there, it repeatedly sputtered and then it suddenly accelerated and lunged forward all the way to dealer. Even the engine fault code displayed on the dash, the mechanic was unable to get an error code on the computer. The mechanic test drove the vehicle with the consumer, and it was then the vehicle exhibited everything the consumer was referring to. When they returned, the mechanic, hooked the computer back to the vehicle, and an error showed a harness issue, which was related to a wire splicing into two wires, which somehow became tangled during assembly.
